I cam into this discussion a bit late, but humans are pretty violent creatures. If there was life, no matter if they were friendly or not we would most likely try to enslave them...

When we see an object, it is because light reflects or is emitted from it. What we see is the light.

It takes 9 minutes for sunlight to get to us. That means that the sun we see right now is the sun from 9 minutes ago.

So what we see of the exoplanets now are what they were many many years ago
Which means that they might have already gone bye-bye during that period
