Think about the history of music, all the way back to Elvis. His lyrics, his dancing, all of it was hated by the conservative media parents of the multitudes of fans he had. Then look at music like that of The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, and other late 60's/early 70's musicians. Once again, controversy with drugs, lyrics, on/off-stage behavior, etc. On the other side of the musical spectrum in the 70's, we've got punk bands like the Sex Pistols. In the 80's, Metallica, the Big Four, and a ton of other heavy metal artists, experienced persecution by the prudent, conservative organizations who's sole purpose was to destroy Metal music . Move ahead a few years to the 90's: Nirvana. Kurt Cobain was constantly plagued by controversy in the media, whether it be because of his drug habits, or his personal lifestyle. 2pac was also a heavily controversial figure in the 90's, and his music is some of the most lasting and influential of its genre. I could name dozens of other classic artists who's music has been called some of the most influential of their era, but the thing they all have in common, is controversy. Personally, I feel OddFuture is the next in a long line of talented, yet controversial musicians. They're music is either embraced with a furious passion by their fans, or hated and dismissed by those who've grown complacent and adapted to the shit that's been being churned out of the music industry over the past decade. I'm eagerly awaiting to see what lies ahead for OF. Whatever it is, I'm sure it will be great. Not only is their music great, but if you see their interviews or home videos, it's easy to see them as regular people, like they'd people you'd go to school and hangout with, not as big shot industry superstars. They've yet to disappoint me, and I don't foresee it happening anytime soon. The point I'm trying to get across is that mainstream music today has lost its edge. It doesn't have the rebellious attitude it once had, and if it's going to get any better, it needs to have more artists like OF. Artists with that 'fuck you' attitude; music for the people, by the people. What do you think?
I agree. But this type of stuff is already happening. Except it is happening to mainstream music, pop artists such as Lady GaGa. Look at how much attention she gets, look at how people frown upon her and how others idolize her. So in my view, it's been going on, and always will. Russian
Don't forget about The Runaways. They definitely changed the way for the music industry. Cherrie Curry also was another one for controversy. I mean not many followed them but Joan Jett and the blackhearts were pretty decent. It would be nice to see another all girl band. If there is I can't think of any in this generation of music. Besides the 90's with the Donnas lol. Music definitely has a future to it that you can't predict. That is what makes music so great, and music; music. BTW like the floyd avatar
I totally fucking agree with you T V, One of the the smartest post's I've seen so far, You took the words right out of my mouth, only comments I can say is, I can't wait too see what Odd Future has in store for them, And Free Earl.
Yeah, but to me it just seems Lady GaGa really just 'talked' about. She doesn't really cause any real tumult within the music world. You're most definitely right, I should have mentioned the many revolutionary women who've made their mark on music (Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, etc.) Thanks, glad you like it
Controversy? What about the Arcade Fire/Coyne feud? Thats pretty big. What about the G.O.O.D Music vs Cash Money vs Roc Nation
This. My views on this are somewhat similar to yours. Most people who criticize OF in general are completely ignorant when it comes to Music. "All they do is rap about raping girls blah blah blah", there is obviously a further meaning to it. I'm happy they became "mainstream" because mainstream music today needs some variety. To be more specific, rap in general needs more variety. Rap today just consists of an asinine flow, poor lyrics, and in general not much effort. Hopefully Odd future will make an impact on Rap/Hip Hop.
The Arcade Fire is good but, I'm talking about music that takes the world by storm and makes a impact. These days, nearly everyone will agree that "mainstream" music sucks. But there were times when mainstream music was good, and part of what made it that was it's edge. It's tendency to be hated by parents and adored by the hordes of disenfranchised youth. As someone once said, "The old generation must always be afraid of the new one."
Nice insight, that was pretty well written. Odd Future have explicitly stated that they make music to piss off people, namely old people, amongst others. The music they make is real, all decisions made by them per their record contract with Universal which I have a lot of respect for. Music industry is controlled by mindless bullshit such as Katy Perry who are overpraised cliche-like. Finally we get a group of guys like OF, kids that look like you can hang out with who just enjoy making music, pushing conservative values to the edge, skating on thin ice, etc. I can't wait for Earl to get back.
I 100% fucking agree. OFWG isn't just a music group I like, like any other. I fucking love them lol. I definitely embrace their music with a fucking passion haha. Also, I'm high and fuck 2dopeboyz
Lol Herman, you are what he refers to when he says "fans with a furious passion". You quote these niggas everywhere I see you, lol.
