Astronomers say new 'super-earth' is possible

Wonder how they saw the planet to being with considering it's so far away and it takes years to see that far.

 

Would be awesome if it's already inhabited

I don't see any reason for why there can't be another planet similar to Earth. The universe is overwhelmingly immense, who knows what lies out there. There could be a thousand other planets with civilized life out there and we wouldn't know it. How do we even know there aren't civilizations out there that have been in existence longer than we on Earth have.

I'm very hopeful for the discovery of life on another planet.

 

Instead of looking for habitable planets, why don't they look and see how on the world are they going to get to it.

Do not assume the "Super Earth" can actually support life just yet. Astronomers will need time to actually study the planet.

 

We will end up there once we fuck over the earth too much.

 

If a shuttle was built that traveled at the speed of light, how would headlights work?

Serioisly.. I think we have a better chance of living on the moon or mars.

 

This things really passionate me, I would love to study astronomy, but I'm not really good in physics nor in math... I think if we are lucky we may see humans reaching other habitable planets before we die.

I think you mean that light takes time to travel, in which case yes it does.. the light has already reached us, or else we wouldn't be able to see it. We don't have to look at the same spot for years and years collecting light for something to become visible if the light is already there..

perhaps if we ever make long distance space travel possible this may be the next stop for us when our sun finally dies out which means the end for earth.. which you know in a few billion years.

Sorry, I was saying i wonder how the say the planet in the first place, considering the planet is so far away, and if a telescope was to reach that far too see it, I'd imagine that the image on the telescope would be from light years ago considering its so far away and it takes awhile for light to travel.

 

That's exactly how it works; when you stare into space, you're looking back into the past. We see a planet 36 light-years away as it appeared 36 years ago.

 

I'm sure it's possible, I'm sure there is some other forms of life (Not what most people call and imagine as aliens) but any organism, is a form of life.

However.. Reaching this would be impossible, the nearest star (besides our sun) would take 76,000 years to get to traveling at 10km/hr.

And we can never actually go the speed of light, just 99.99% of it.. and thats atoms, not a ship... impossible :/

Exactly my point.
All of these "findings" are worth nothing to us if we can't get there.
They should do something useful and create a fast spaceship to actually reach on of these stars.

That's a dumb way of thinking. 7 billion people on earth, finite resources, what the hell do you thinks going to happen? Matter cannot be created or destroyed, so unless you have some way to magically create oil to make up for the demand in the shrinking supply, then you're screwed.

 

Nothing with mass can travel at the speed of light, so we would have to figure out how to get there first before worrying about headlights.

I'm pretty sure the planet is reachable because it is near one of our nearest stars or something, but i don't know.

 

Basically, It goes like this:

1. Look at that star. There are slight wobbles in it's locations
2. Let's use advanced telescope to calculate exactly how large the wobble is
3. The wobble is the right size for a planet of X size to be orbiting around it
4. The wobble is also the right size for a planet to be Y away from it
5. Since the star is type Z, the planet is X sized, and it is Y away from it's star, It is safe to assume the planet could be habitable if it has the correct atmospheric conditions
