Astronomers say new 'super-earth' is possible

If 2012 goes down,
Super-earth is were I'm camping.

 

My main thought on all of these "Planets" that are millions of light years away... how in the world, of our lives, are we supposed to reach it?
Sure the planet is able to hold life... but first, you must send life there.
Unless there is already life on that planet.

NASA has to stop sending satellites for pictures around the planet and start sending those damn satellites into the atmosphere, maybe see what is actually there and not speculate.

Exactly.
If there is life, how do we know they will let us join?
How do they know we will coexist?
We live in a dominant nation. We won't go to that planet to make friends with aliens, we're gonna go in and whoop ass... most likely blow that planet up, and then we screw ourselves over. Because that's how our government is.

I love science when it has to do with space and planets, it fascinates me.
But no one has still answered the question of how HUMANS are supposed to reach these far away planets.

It's a shame it's so far away. We probably won't be able to get there for a very long time.

 

Wouldn't it take forever to get there? Kind of pointless

 

Just build a GIANT space shuttle. Have a human race living IN it (would have to be self supporting) and after generations and generations maybe we'd be there.

Well, I read a book once.

Basically, all of the humans came aboard a space ship, and they froze them all, and put them in stasis chambers.

Then, a few million families stayed out of stasis, and watched over everything, and their children did the same, and so on, and so on.

Eventually, after a few 1000 generations, they got there.
And then were massacred by angry aliens, which is similar to the English > Polish feeling at the moment.

 

Black holes, shortcuts through space, thats how we travel distances that are light-years away.

 

I don't think we will ever reach it unless we invent some super fast space ship.

 

Even if we can't reach it in our lifetime, we definitely need to aim some sort of form of communication towards that planet in case there's intelligent life. I know we'd appreciate it if an alien planet let us know we found them (in a peaceful way).. maybe they already have a way to travel!

The nearest black hole is 1,600 light years away... even if we could somehow use a black hole as a trans-space-time warp, it'd take us 100 times longer in the end to get there

 

It was theoretical, I find the idea of using black holes to travel vast distances through space a lot more interesting then a "super fast spaceship"

 

I'm pretty sure they're fabricating miniature black holes in some underground facility in europe, maybe we all get portal guns in the near future!

 

Everyones filled too much with the "2012" thing which is ironic that the mayan calander was done then....they were wiped out of existance. Now a new earch, I call bull on that.

 

Interesting story, although I doubt we can build a ship fast and good enough in time for 2012 . I doubt we'll reach that planet it in our life time. If only teleport's existed...

 

This is like the 20th time in two years they've found a potentially habitable planet. The only reason they say it's potentially habitable is, assuming it's the same atmosphere exactly, then this planet would be similar to earth. That is not even close to enough evidence to say anything definitive. In fact, the only way they can even measure the planets is by tiny wobbles in a star. While the math is accurate - I've seen it myself - I don't think that we are getting to the core of the issue here. It's not about the size or atmosphere of the planet, those are things people can fix with some engineering, It's about whether it's rocky, and whether we can get to it.

Also: A light year is the distance light travels in one year. That means, that if we travel at the speed of light for 36 years, we'd reach our final destination. Then, it would take another 36 years for the signal saying we arrived to get back to earth. By then we could be dead, or anything.
Fun fact: Whenever something moves, a tiny portion of that object is converted into energy. When something moves at the speed of light, 100% of that thing is converted into energy. To stay whitin the safe zone, we would have to be, at most, around 1% of the speed of light, meaning it takes 3600 years to get to that planet
