Speed up my computer / Suggest me a new computer!

Before i get started I would like to mention that i am an absolute novice when it comes to anything technological. So all answers may have to be dumbed down slightly

I googled how to find my computer specifications, and this is what i am currently using.

I have been slaving away in my spare time this year creating my runescape hybrid. 45 def 80 attack 99 str 99 dung 94/99 mage currently. Anyways this is a pc forum.

My account is finished and today i went hybridding for the first time. It's a beast as I knew, but i found it near impossible to switch efficiently with the amount of lag i was experiencing.

I realise the servers are shit, and on a pk world at full capacity there is always alot of lag, but nobody else seemed to be hindered as much as I am.

So i figured, with my birthday/christmas approaching, and with me having absolutely no idea what i wanted from my parents. (I'm 17 living on campus at university for anyone wondering), i thought maybe a new computer could be in order

So i am calling upon all you techy's to look at my specifications, and possibly point out an area in which I could upgrade it in order to get better performance

    OR;

Suggest new computers which would better suit my needs

I would like to get clear however that i am not a HARDCORE gamer. The only game i really play on my computer is runescape, and its the only game i've ever been seriously into. I do not own a playstation 3 or xbox 360, have never been into blackops etc. So! I have been look at these alienware laptops, but with prices in excess of $3000, i am not really sure it is necessary for me :/

I have heard that if you contact a retailer that BUILDS computers rather than selling stock computers, they can set you up with a better machine, at a fraction of the price. However, i really have no idea where to find one of these people! do i just go into computer repair shops, or just computer retailers? Or is it a matter of contacting websites and then having them ship me the relevant parts.

I have never built a computer or ever seen one without its case on really, so unless building computers is far less complicated than it seems i think that is out of the question.

    Sooo... In summing up

If anyone can point out an area within my specifications that can easily be fixed, then people tell me how to do that.

E.g More ram? Overclock? whatever that means

    OR;

Suggest me the kind of computer i should be in the market for, or at least what specifications i should be looking for.

    Thanks a bunch in advace,

    Byebrid123

EDIT: I was just browsing some other threads in this forum and found an awesome post by another user in regards to helping someone out in a similar situation. He however, was after a computer to run 15+ bots, but if the computer he suggested is high powered, then wow, because i was expecting a much higher price range!

Anyways, If i was to go with an answer such as this and receive it all in the mail (I just actually did realise just now that he was receiving a desktop not a laptop), how much would a computer person charge to throw it all together for me?

Anyways, heres hoping i get answers as good as Ivy's!

To upgrade it to anything reasonably good would be like $350+ for a processor that fits your computer but wont compare to todays standards.
If you want a new computer, I can come up with a build. I don't have time now though

Honestly that build I put together in the quotes is a really nice build. It's a damn good graphics card. Not top of the line, but it should max out most games at decent settings. That's better than anything Alienware will sell you in the <$2000 range.

I would suggest buying parts separately than going through a manufacturer, just because manufacturers overprice everything big time. Plus you get less quality parts and usually a shitty warranty in comparison (you have separate warranties on each part rather than the whole system, but usually it is better/lasts longer)

There are tons of guides all over the net (I have one in the guide section) about the actual building process. It's not hard at all, but I'm sure you could find someone local to do it for $50-$100. Just make sure they have experience. Don't ship them the parts, make them come to you. If they have custom builds of their own (which they should if they're offering that service) ask to see proof etc. You can usually tell when someone has experience because the inside will be neat whereas an inexperienced builder will have cables going everywhere etc.

Good luck, if you don't like anything about that build lemme know + give me a budget and I'll adjust it to your needs.

ok yeah i'd much rather just buy a new computer than spend $500 on my current one

My parents just chose a storebought computer for me with that one.
I was just looking for simple solutions like take it to a computer place and get more ram or something.

Its almost a necessity that it be a laptop though :/
Is there anything similar I could do as for compiling all parts separately and then having someone put it together for me with a laptop?
or is this out of the question

You'd pay quite literally 2x as much to build a laptop then to buy a prebuilt one..

hmm, maybe it would be better to build a desktop and keep that in my room, and then keep my current laptop for class and university work + travelling..

Yeah "gaming" laptops are practically useless. I've never been in a situation where I'm out and I'm like "fuck, wish I had crysis 2 on the go" lol. They have smaller screens, clunkier controls, cost buttloads more, etc.

I'd just build the desktop I put together or similar + buy a decent lightweight 15"ish laptop with at least a dual core + 4gb ram. No need for something fancy just for school work.

    Ok thanks for your help
I think it pretty much comes down to, if i want the performance i need to brid without lag, im gonna need a fucking expensive laptop or a desktop computer. And if i pay to have the parts come separately it takes away 2/3 or more of the price.

Seems like a pretty clear winner here
thanks to everyone who's posted :)

if anyone else has anything they'd like to share feel free :)

Define expensive? I have computers that can do what you're looking for and they're not that expensive.

$1000 for a desktop that you build yourself will get you a BEASTY gaming PC. If you just want one for runescape, you could probably pick yourself up a semi-decent one (or build, but as you're a novice you might as well buy one as low-end ones can sometimes be cheaper pre-built) from www.newegg.com

EDIT: http://www.ibuypower.com/ are also OK for customizing pre-built computers. It's like building your own, but they do it for you then send it to you. Bear in mind this isn't the cheapest option, however it can sometimes be cheaper than buying pre-built from elsewhere.
