How To: Jailbreak Your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad​

Why Jailbreak?​

You jailbreak in order to customize your iDevice. To give it freedom, to make it YOURS.
You will learn how to personalize your iDevice with useful and interesting applications!
You'll be able to rotate your screen any way you want, change the icons, move them around and keep them in any position, like making the letter "H" on your homescreen!
It's useful for some, fun for others.
It all depends on your preferance.
And you will learn all about it here and now!​

How To Jailbreak​

There are a LOT of ways to jailbreak.
Easiest way is to use WiFi and Safari, only on supported firmwares.
Now everything will be explained in the following posts, and below on to where to find the firmware, unlock applications and how-to.
Other methods include a Computer, iTunes, USB cable, IPSW's, software etc...
Read on, you'll figure it out ​

Un-Jailbreaking​

Say your iDevice is malfunctioning, cracked, broken, turning on and off, going CRAZY!
Well, you can't give it back because it's jailbroken
Oh NO! Russian, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!
Don't worry... plug it into iTunes, hit "Restore" or "Update" and you will be restored to factory settings <3​

Now you have some of the basic knowledge of what jailbreaking REALLY is.
Contrary to popular belief, jailbreaking does NOT slow down your iPhone, it's what you INSTALL that does. If you install correct Application and delete the ones you never use, your iDevice will FLY!
As in Speed not like a plane guys, don't get your hopes up... Apple hasn't hooked up airplane mode to work with a plane yet, nor has it been jailbroken to do so. YET!​

Anyways. ON TO THE TUTORIAL!​

There will be TWO different versions!
The EASY version... and the Little longer than hoped version!
You do NOT need to be a rocket scientist to know how to do either!
Jus tfollow this guide, and you will make out fine!​

Jailbreaking Using Jailbreakme 3.0
The easiest way to jailbreak.
All you need is to be conected to WiFi or internet on your iDevice.
This type of jailbreak ONLY supports the following firmwares:​

• iPad1: 4.3 through 4.3.3​
• iPad2: 4.3.3​
• iPhone3GS: 4.3 through 4.3.3​
• iPhone4: 4.3 through 4.3.3​
• iPhone4-CDMA: 4.2.6 through 4.2.8​
• iPod touch 3g: 4.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.3​
• iPod touch 4g: 4.3 through 4.3.3​

To Check your firmware, please follow these instructions.​

• Go into "Settings"​

• Click "General"​

​

• Click "About"​

• Scroll down to find "Firmware"​

​

See if it matches the above list, if it DOES, then continue reading, if it DOES NOT, please skip down to the "iTunes Jailbreak" section.​

• Open up Safari, and type in; Jailbreakme.com​
• Click enter. ​
• You will see a site like this: ​

• Or If you DO NOT, if you see "This Firmware is NOT supported" that means you have a NEWER firmware version. Please SKIP this version and go down to the iTunes version below.​
• Click "Free"​

​

• Click "Install" ​

​

• It will install Cydia on to your homescreen.​
• Your iDevice will now be jailbroken!​
• HIP HIP HARRAY!​
• Please scroll down on how to add jailbroken applications and sources regarding using Cydia.​

Jailbreaking Using iTunes + Jailbreaking Software​

• Make sure you have iTunes installed!​
• Following the steps above, figure out what your firmware is.​
• After figuring out what your firmware is, download the CORRECT IPSW (firmware) that matches yours:​

• NOTE: YOU CAN ALSO DOWNLOAD A JAILBREAKING PROGRAM OFF OF THIS SITE. This is the BEST site to use for EVERYTHING!

After figuring out your firmware, search on Google:​

"Jailbreak iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad Firmware X.XX"​

This is to make sure you download the CORRECT program that works best with your firmware. I can't possibly cover every program, there are many. But I can recommend some.​

I would also recommend that you go to the DevTeams website. The ALWAYS update the latest firmwares and updates to which program works for them:​

After you have downloaded your program, IPSW (iTunes restore/will be jailbroken)​

Step One
Open iTunes and connect the iDevice to your PC/Mac.
​

Step Two
Press and hold the Home button and the Lock button at the same time.
​

Step Three
Once the screen goes black, release the lock button, but hold the home button until iTunes pops up the following message:

The iPhone will look like this:
​

• Download PwnageTool 3.0 and your iPhone firmware. (Above LINKS!)​
• Launch PwnageTool, Agree, Expert Mode.​
• Select your iPhone model.​
• Yourcomputer should detect the downloaded firmware, if it DOESN'T, please browse for it.​
• When you get to the menu, choose Build. this will build your jailbroken IPSW, will take 15minutes+ Be Patient!​
• Choose a folder to save your custom IPSW.​
• Follow the onscreen instruction. You will be forced to put the iPhone into DFU/Recovery mode in order to install the jailbroken IPSW.​
• Hold the home and power buttons for 10 seconds. Then, you will have to release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds.​
• Close PwnageTool and launch iTunes.​
• iTunes will give you a message saying it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. ​
• In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click &#8220;Restore&#8221; at the same time. It will open a window where you will have to select the custom firmware that you built.​
• iTunes will restore your iPhone using the custom firmware. Be patient!​
• Set up your iPhone once restored.​
• Reboot your iPhone and you should have a Cydia icon on the springboard.​

Congratulations! You have Jailbroken your iPhone/iDevice!​

Now it is Time to Mod!
Site with the BEST and ALL of the Cydia Repositories!

Open Cydia (FIRST TIME): Select USER

Then you see the Cydia HOME screen:

Click on "Manage" and then "Sources"

Click "Edit" then "Add"

Enter a Repository, from link/Picture I posted ABOVE, then click "Add Source"

It will Verify, Download, and then return to the repository screen.

Congratulations! You have added your sources! Now go into Sections or Search and browse the MANY features!

It is a very nice guide though, you should definitely create another. I am purchasing an ipod touch this weekend from a guy on here, and this will help if I decide to jailbreak it. I'll refer my friends here that need help.

Really? Then I'm interested in speaking to you about that. Do you have all kinda of ipod stuff, or just the phones? I might possibly be needing one with a new plan in a month.

Nice guide, you could organize a little more and make titles more clear according to its importance etc.

 

I have iPhone materials :/
I don't deal in iPods as the market isn't good for profit.
I make double on iPhones and would only be making 20% on the iPods, so it wasn't worth it to buy for me.
I can order replacement parts, but thats about it.

Everything is in the way it should be though :/
And all titles are in Purple, Red is too Rich to be used for every title.
I tried to use colors that wouldn't hurt TOO much, but that stood out. I thought purple was perfect.

If you read through, it tells you what you should do. Then the steps are different for the iTunes jailbreaking, that's why they are below and seperate.

But I will look over and fix what I can of course

Nice guide, I've played around with Jailbreaking mine but I don't really like it so much. Too confusing lol.

 

Yes thats a con of jailbreaking, you have to spend quite an amount of to get the full use of jailbreaking. Basic jailbreaking to get free apps, themes and etc... just take a bit of effort to learn.

I believe Cons should be added to this guide as to why not to jailbreak as the person him/her self should decide if the benefits outweigh the cons. Jailbreaking SUCKS battery life MUCH faster then a non jailbroken factory iPod. Which is a huge con as a lot of people have a bad habbit of not charging their electronics.

Not true.
I have plenty of jailbroken and none-jailbroken iPods and iPhones.
The older generations, yes, are SLIGHTLY slower, but not by much.
The newer generations, 4+, don't slow down AT ALL. The speed is the same, the performance is the same, etc...
It only slows down if you run every single program, and don't close any of them, in the multitasking screen.
My phone has been running for from laggy or slow.
My friends' iPhones run slower than mince, because when jailbroken, you can also add an app called "Speed Intensifier" which makes the iPhone "overclock" so everything runs smoother and faster.

The biggest gripe I have is that to "remove" cydia you have to actually do an itunes reset....and I had to download a 666mb update since I didn't have the newest version.
