    Teenagers rob 7 cents

There was a story a couple months ago, about a pentioneer who was robbed, and she ended up beating the young man with her handbag.

I still feel strongly that 4 years is completely absurd. Jails are already costing huge sums of money to the tax payer, and are over-crowded enough as it is.

In 2010 in the uk, jails cost the tax payer £10 billion.
The money is being wasted, as it is not being spent on rehabiliting them back into the community, but on keeping them behind bars. All this does is create if you like, a wall bewteen them and the outside world. So that when they are released they just can't fit in and return to all they know, crime.

In a time when countries are in serious debt, this is going to have no benefit whatsoever to anybody.

The benefit is that no other elderly man or woman will be assaulted and robbed. Yes this will cost the taxpayers money, but so be it. Rehabilitation programs(also taxpayers money) usually don't work especially for kids who won't listen anyways. Doing some hard time might make him think twice before he does something like this again. It also could make him worse, but theres no stopping someone who wants to be a criminal.

Normally I would think the verdict and subsequent sentence was a bit harsh but in this case, the kid got what he deserved. The fact that the man he robbed and assaulted was a helpless 73 year old, aswell as the fact that he fought it in court instead of owning up to his actions and showing remorse were obviously aggravating factors in his case. Hopefully he will take this opportunity to turn his life around instead of turning into a career criminal.

So what would he have gotten charged with if he didn't have the bb guns or punch the guy in the face?

I agree with this to some extent. More money should be spent on rehabilitation, because as you say, all it does is create a wall between them and the outside world.

However, this kid is 15. He doesn't pay taxes, so he wasn't contributing to society anyway. Now, if he's robbing people for money, chances are he would of just gone on the dole anyway, which is also a drain on society.

Some times it's not as simple to simply rehabilitate people. Some people will never want to be productive members of society unfortunately.

Punishment doesn't fit the crime. He should be getting the prison time for assaulting the man not taking his 7 cents...

The Sentence was for not Admitting to the Crime, He kept Fighting it, which he knew he was guilty as did everyone else, thats why he got the Punishment.

He deserved what he got. He still stole and assaulted a man, should his sentence be different if it was a higher amount? Or vice versa? No

I think the sentence is pretty just. He decided to plead not guilty wasting the courts time, and was tried by a jury. Plus the fact that they used 'pistols' to commit this assault and robbery.
Some what makes me smile that this kid is now a felon for a mere 7 cents.

4 years for this $.07? He should've just lured some kid for 140k, tbh.

/troll Honestly, his crime was more of armed assault than robbery. He deserves whatever he is given, in that case.

That's pretty sad. Likewise, it's the principal. Regardless of how much it was the law was broken.

I'd jail him for 10 years just for punching a 73 year old in the face.
He then shot him with a BB gun, sigh.
America is eff'ed up. He deserved his charge.

I can't seem to put the phrase "GF BANK" into a better story :p

But yeah the sentence is about right, is pretty much armed robbery.

To be honest, the money that governments spend on keeping criminals behind bars is justified. However, I believe they should take advantage of the over-population of inmates by putting them to work. I know I would.

Prison should for the most part maintain basic facilities but enforce a laborious culture. I know in some places they do, but in first world countries, a lot of prisons could be considered better accommodation than what a lot of people live in outside of prison.
