Death, what do you think happens?

When I think about how big the universe is, the thought of a God or any Divine Ruler seems completely impossible to me. There for I don't believe in an after-life. Why does something have to happen after we die. It's simple, your body shuts down, your organs stop functioning, and you cease to exist. You're after-life is in the people you knew, what they say about you, and the impact you leave on the world. You're one out of billions of people on this planet, you're death could make no impact on this world or it could make a huge impact on the people that inhabit this planet. When I think about death it makes me want to be someone, I don't need to be anyone huge, but I want to have an after-life through other people.

Your contradicting yourself, and to top it off dreams are in a part of your brain or are we just dreaming someone said that.

I've always thought that when I died I would wake up in another place with a reaction like, ' HOLY SHIT! that was one fucked up dream!! '. So my current life would be a really long dream and maybe the place I'd wake up in could be something greater.

Death is just a part of life. After death, you're responsible for Earth and its inhabitants. That's what I like to think.

Honestly, I believe that after death, there is nothing, no existence, no consciousness. This question has been asked for thousands of years. We are no closer to knowing the answer now than a thousand years ago. Gues theres only one way to find out...

I think every single thing in this universe is connected. We all come from atoms, the smallest unit of matter. When we die, our bodies decompose, helping the Earth. The Earth revolves around the sun which is one of the countless number of stars in the universe. Who fucking knows what's beyond what our minds can comprehend.

When a person dies they cease to live. No magic about it.

Just like when you blow out a flame, it's gone. Just like you when you're dead. Nothing special happens. You're just dead.

Even a bacteria has to have a consciousness if your argument is to hold.
Assuming every living creature has a consciousness, then a single bacterial colony, say your average trillion-bacterium bread mold, doubles in size every day. Now if you have one trillion consciousnesses on the first day, and two trillion on the second, how many new consciousnesses do you have after the seventh day?
Now somebody comes and sprays disinfectant on your bread. Where do all of the 64 trillion consciousnesses evolve into? there aren't even remotely enough insects to hold them all. Do they stop? What happens after they stop?

Well no lol because bacteria aren't conscious of themselves. I mean species with the brain capacity for the being to be conscious of itself. Also, who's to say consciousness doesn't exist in other dimensions, waiting to be reincarnated?

Also, using your bacteria argument. Why would the bacteria's consciousness need to evolve once it dies? What if it just reincarnates into another bacteria?
Also, why do you consider consciousness to be individual? Ever heard of mass consciousness?

Realistically thinking, probably nothing. Consciousness will just cease and your mind will be unable to perceive anything. Essentially you will not exist. People treat that scenario as a bad thing when really it isn't. If you cease to exist, you will not have a care in the world because you are not, well, you.

I can only hope that consciousness goes on in some manner though. I absolutely do not accept any of the standard traditional religious views of the afterlife, but I would like to think that in some way, probably inconceivable to any human, we become part of something bigger. I'm personally a pantheist, which isn't much more than a very spiritual atheist but I'd like to think of an afterlife (if you could even call it that) as becoming one with the universe. To someone who is arrogant enough to think that our corner of the universe is somehow special, that statement may not mean much.. but to me (and I'm sure many of the intellectuals here at Sythe) the implications of such a thing would be profound.

If you reduce the pool to "Advanced consciousnesses" there must be an extremely clear definition of what an advanced consciousness is, and, because of evolution, that is not possible

The reason the bacteria's consciousness would need to evolve is because you said it would.

Mass consciousness may exist, but that still requires individual consciousnesses to be massed.

Just like how you didn't feel anything before you're born, I think it's going to be like that when you die.

That is an interesting question. The simple answer is I just don't know. The religious type believe in some sort of afterlife (heaven/hell)... nothing against them :)

when you think about it... when you die.. what happens? do you simply stop existing? what becomes of YOU? what becomes of your THOUGHTS, your FEELINGS, your MEMORIES? do they cease to exist in a millisecond (repeating myself here)?

Just interesting questions that you can think about for hours and never come to an answer... but one thing IS for certain: everyone will die. Everyone in this topic will one day find out what happens, if anything, after you die.
