Is time travel possible?

I apologize if there has already been a thread about this, I'm sure there has.

Post what your opinion about time travel, and why.

I don't think it's possible to go backwards in time, as it would be way too easy to mess up things.

Example:

Going 5 minutes back in time to kill yourself.
You'd stop yourself from ever going back in time, which means there was no one there to kill you.

There are many things like this that makes backwards time travel seem impossible, but what about forward time travel?

Any theories, ideas, facts?

 

This would be known as the Grandfather Paradox.


What has been proposed to counter this paradox are different dimensions. Essentially, if you were to travel back in time, you would be travelling into a different dimension which replicates our own but has no bearing our own other than its symmetry.

Time travel itself is seemingly possible, it's been tried in the Hafele and Keating Experiment. Ultimately, Humans at our present point in knowledge cannot time travel, and quite honestly, we cannot fathom a pragmatic ability to contemplate time travelling. There are theoretical physicists who talk about using a supermassive blackholes gravitational force to further propel us faster than the speed of light, thus imitating the affect of travelling back in time.

Ultimately however, the colloquial interpretation of time travel at present is impossible, that interpretation being sitting in a machine, flicking a few buttons and bam. Perhaps one day if the fourth dimension of time can be traveled through like our current three dimensions.

 

Thanks for posting, I agree that at this time I don't think that we can time travel due to us just not knowing how safely.

However, I do think it's possible. (If we only knew how.)

 

there are another theoris about time traveling as you said not possible now,but than there would be time travel turists all over the place regardless of the time we live on now.
einstein proofed that time would freeze when something would travel at the speed of light.
i think that time travel is possible but not as we people image it in our minds.

I'm not sure how Einstein proved that time would freeze when something travels at the speed of light. If true, that's quite interesting.

I picture time travel as a "Back to the future" type method, but on a larger scale & on a faster scale.

He's talking about Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

The Theory of Relativity concludes that we CANNOT travel past the speed of light in space. Given that theoretical physicists can only factor this in for time travel it seems from that, that time travel utilizing this method cannot happen.

I don't know very much at all about Relativity, I do know however that many Scientists, respected ones at that are divided on both sides. I'm also not sure if any Particle Accelerators on Earth have managed to exceed the speed of light, I only know that they've come rather close to it.

 

Personally, I believe it is impossible to time travel due to the fact that in order to time travel, we'd need to move ALL the particles in our body to another place in time... Meaning that we'd have to figure out a way for a machine to completely disassemble our body, put it in another place, and reassemble it completely how it was before it was disassembled and to top it all off, you'd have to do it so quick that your heart wouldn't stop beating or you wouldn't make it back to the past. It might quite possibly be a future plan but currently, I do not think we have the technology, nor do we want it due to the fact that it could get into the wrong hands such as inventions. Someone could take a mac computer back 400 years and say they invented it and they are a new inventor and it turns out even more successful due to the fact that it was the very first computer. There are so many advantages to it but so many unfair advantages for other people as well. Basically there are too many pros and too many cons. IMO.

 

I can't remember where I read it but one of them is possible whether it's back or forth I can't recall. As for paradoxs I'm fairly certain they can't really occur. Whatever we might do by going back in time must have already happened for our present time to be how it is. However if time travel is possible going back then why have we not seen said people I can't recall who holds that as a theory but it's similar to Hawkins(sp?) theory pertaining to idea of alien species.

 

I think I remember reading somewhere that standing in a very strong gravitational field had something to do with time travel... I'm not too sure so don't hold me to that lol

 

As of thinking about this idea in our time, I believe that it is impossible to know whether or not this truly can happen. Surely this would be the biggest breakthrough known to man but just think about it - Traveling through the past and the future - how can this even be possible. Say for example you wanted to travel back 10 years from today. If it were possible wouldn't this be wrong in a way. The past should just be history and left untouched. As for the future, it really puzzles me to think their is one. Isn't this lifetime just being written? We can't know for sure what would happen if we did find a way to travel into the future.

I am not an expert on the subject and only am saying to what I believe from my own perspective. If anyone has anything that can conclude time travel is possible I would be willing to hear it. As of right now I will put it that it's not possible. With our technology, it really isn't anything near to this sort of thing.

 

I personally think we will never be able to travel back in time as I believe trying to create it would be too complicated and take too long to figure out.

It's not possible. If people years from now could travel back in time, than we would always have had time travel... it's highly improbable to say no one in the next tens of thousands of years had the volition to go back in time and teach the art of time travel to one of our ancestors. Besides, new research suggests the absolute physical speed limit that Einstein hypothesized is incorrect... so there goes the theory of time travel via traveling faster than the speed of light, I'd say.

As for traveling to the future, there's just no scientific theory for it is there? It's nothing but sci-fi.

 

Well, I'm no scientist but I think we'll get there one day. It's like Star Wars, almost everything you see in it we may indeed reach that line of technology some day. Although, the future hasn't occurred yet (or has it?) so how would we go to somewhere that hasn't existed yet?

 

Technically, following Einstein's law of relativity, it is possible to travel back in time by going faster than the speed of light. traveling forward in time is a simple matter of going at a negative speed. Both are equally impossible for humans, however, since some physical law dictates that to go forward in time, atoms would have to vibrate at a negative speed. This can be achieved by lowering the temperature below absolute zero. Going back in time requires, due to another law that states a relationship between speed and conversion to energy, the conversion of more than 100% of mass into energy.

Basically, not gonna happen.

Although I can see where your theory about a different dimension may be true, there are some flaws.

We are assuming that when you go back into time and kill yourself, your actually travelling into another dimension. In this we are assuming that the dimension we have traveled into is an exact replica of our current one. If it is then we will have an endless loop of that person traveling into another dimension and killing himself, in that other dimension. So are we assuming that there are infinite dimensions, or can we say that ones existence in the other dimension is completely erased?

 

No partical can be accelerated by anything to the speed of like without be turned into energy.

Nothing is positive and negative masses instantly creating and then binding to destory themselfs.

 

if it was possible to this date it would have been done yes in the future i do believe it is possible but to this date we dont have the technology
