Do rares ever actually raise in price?

The answer is yes, in VERY small amounts.

Runescape 2006/2007 -

Party hats costed 150-450m, no street value as this was before the grand exchange.

The GP / IRL cash ratio was 5$ / m

This means a blue phat that costed 450m-500m was around 2500$ irl.

Runescape 2011 -

Party hats are in the billions street value.

GP / IRL cash ratio - .45-.50c / m

Blue party hats are 5b~ Meaning they cost around 2500$ irl


This goes for all of the rares other than the smaller ones which have been manipulated beyond what was expected.

There you have it, anyone wondering if keeping a party hat ever means you're actually making money.

The only time you could have made money off party hats, was buying plenty of purples (for example) for 50$ & 300m in game.

Then selling after free trade for 650$.

Back then there were less advanced bots and gold farmers. GP's just dropped because it's too easily obtainable. Grenwals are 1M+ an hour, Frost Dragon Bots make 2M+ an hour. It's easy to get GP nowadays. The rares inflate, but they also do so in ratio to the GP's value.

 

Glad someone finally cleared this up, was sick of people complaining about if they still had their rares today they could sell them for MUCH more.

The truth is most rares are always worth the same amount in ACTUAL money, as the price of the rare rises, the price of GP drops.

All rares do gradually rise in RSGP as you've already depicted.

However as your question doesn't specify whether they rise in RSGP or real life cash, you have already stated that they have risen significantly in RSGP over the past few years however due to the easily obtainable methods of RSGP, the price of rares in relation to real life money has stayed relatively the same.

This will most likely continue due to the current RuneScape economy unless Jagex introduces new skills/features to force players to extinguish their RSGP (E.G. Prayer, Herblore, Construction) in the near-future.

 

The fact is, rsgp is much easier to get, even doing it legit.
I made over 5b legit in a week.

Back in 2006 100m = now 5b.
Rare's RL value has not gone anywhere, a max of 50$ change.

Meaning prices haven't really changed.

This is true. Normally people who say you make money from holding partyhats are legit players in the game though. In their case, it is true that you get more and more gp as you hold partyhats.

There was a thread on this a few months back where someone tried to propose partyhats as a real life investment, but it was fairly quickly challenged by the changing price of gold.

However, there are some points in the game's existence like you said that money could have been made from buying/selling them. These occurred when the price of gold and gold for partyhats were not changing at geometrically complementary rates.

Not true, gold value IN GAME is becoming less also, 100m use to be able to buy you BRAND new gear. (When bandos came out)

Now a days all the brand new gear is 5b. (When nex sets came out) - Perfect example.

 

When I sold in 2005, blue partyhat was around 30M and mils were averaging $13 each (blue later rose to 50M that year and mils dropped to $10 each). When my brother sold in 2007, a blue partyhat was around 500M, and mils were averaging $3 per mil. Now a mil averages for $0.45, and blue partyhats are around 4B.

2005: $260-$500
2007: $1500
Now: $1800-$2400

So yes, they're still going up, but not as quickly. Keep in mind partyhats recently crashed, and blues hit like 5.3B their last spike, which would have made them worth $2400. I could see them hitting that by the end year again easily.

 

I think its weird that 3 years ago, 1m coins was worth alot.
These days, 1m isnt really worth that much to someone in the black market.
Do you think in another 3 years, 100m will be not alot?

 

I'm glad you posted this. It clears up the issue when people are raging over not keeping their party hats.

 

The game either won't exist or will have trade limits reintroduced again thanks to all the bot farmers.

 

Actually, blue phats are above 4.5b, which is why I keep it in the 5b area.

Blue phats were worth over 100m in 2005. In 2005, it mill prices were closer to 10$ / m.

They only really went up from 2005-2007, but they haven't moved since.

 

Just wondering, how'd you manage to do that?

All rares are bound to raise even more in price too. They are unobtainable items.
