Internet through the brain

PLEASE NOTE: The question is not whether it's POSSIBLE, but whether you would DO IT.

Nanotechnology is becoming more advanced, and you KNOW someone's going to invent a way to connect the internet to your brain eventually. They're already creating contacts that are precursors to the technology that will project images directly into your mind (see: HERE, #10).

So my question to you is: would you allow your mind to be connected to the internet if the procedure was affordable and extremely quick and safe? (Note the IMPLANT PROCEDURE is safe, but maybe not the device[?])

Things to think about:

Pros:
•Constant access to information and entertainment
•Stay in touch with everyone you know all the time through chat, phone calls, etc
•instant transfer of information such as images directly from the eye (theoretical feature, don't know if it'd be possible)
•Constant ability to catalog thoughts and information throughout the day
•Extreme enhancements in every aspect with the aid of a omniscient computer

Cons:
•Risk of unsafe connections
•Risk for a fatal malfunction
•Health risks from being so close to devices used to transmit signals to remain connected to the internet
•Possibility of being constantly watched by the government or by your parents, who will have instant and irrevocable access to everything you're doing, thinking, have done, or maybe about to do


Personally, I would do it. You would never need to open a book again, you would never have to worry about degrading memory or any memory dysfunction. Pros outweigh the POTENTIAL cons heavily imo.

I wouldn't do it. I like keeping my thoughts private. I'd be in jail for some of the things I think about.

 

Is that your only qualm? What if there are laws enacted to keep thoughts private unless consented to be released?

My biggest fear wouldn't be OFFICIALS getting into my head, but hackers... imagine someone streams non-stop meatspin.com into your mind's-eye and there's no way to stop it! D:

 

That's the dream but it would be pretty sweet. I doubt they'll make this anytime soon

 

I'm not so sure it's as far away as you think. This about the technology that would be needed...

wireless internet (such as 3G or 4G)... Check.
Nanotechnology... pretty damn close
Micro-engineered chipsets... Check.
Memory... Check, it could run much the same way as how VPS's work now, store everything over the internet on either your own home computer, or a company-rented one.
Image projection onto the eye... not Check... prototypes? Check, and rapidly gaining heading towards an end product
The only thing left to figure out how to control the chipset with your mind. Granted, that IS an extremely complex field of study, but they're already able to make paraplegics operate chairs and computers with their thoughts... it's all a matter of refining what we already know

It's possible... but maybe there would be excellent protection against hackers? Would you then?

 

Ill just stick with the old laptop, if you ask me.

 

this idea could not happen in the near future.

why?

1. just because we may develop nano-technology doesnt mean that it would be immediately compatible with our neurons.
2. we are still very far away from understanding how the brain actually works. we have FMRI's now but that only allows us to view activity in the brain. we have mapped the brain, but it is still a very simple map.
3. although our brain does show localization of function, it also displays equipotentiality. this means that other areas of the brain can serve to help increase functionality.
basically, even if we did find where to put these "nano" chips, we wouldnt know how the rest of the brain would react to it.


this eerily reminds me of those chips that are supposedly being developed to track us and our money.


also, having every bit of information at our fingertips would help deteriorate memory.
remember, if you dont use it you lose it. you would ever need to use ur memory if u had everything at hand.

Agreed completely, your thoughts should be your own.

If they didn't have access to your thoughts, then yeah, i'd consider it.
Even if there is an endless list of problems with it..

 

As our brains are far more complex than computers, i think tihs is possible. I would do this.

 

You can't turn a brain implant off. I support making computerized sunglasses and contact lenses. they can be controlled through eye movements, the technology already exists and is used in planes for emergency communication systems.

 

Had to lol. There is no such thing as protection against hackers. Sure, you can erect script kiddie protections all over the place, but a real hacker could break those in minutes.

Our brains are so amazingly complex lol... If it is even possible, it'll probably happen in the far far future.
