This has been around the news recently and we have been having discussions about it in church.

    Picture 2 senarios.

You see your brother or sister or family member being beaten up by another person, they are then left on the floor covered in blood. Of course instinct is to run up and help him/her.

But lets say you see the exact same thing happen to someone you didnt know.

Things like this happen every day, hit and run drivers, people having heart attacks in the street, and people just walk on by, not giving it a second look.

Are people so afraid of the reprocussions of helping someone in need?

I have never been in a situation where someone was needed assistance where i could come to their aid but if the opputunity ever arose of course i would help.

Its not being religious to help someone in these situations, its just human nature and having a heart.

If you saw a random stranger on the street being harrased and then lying in a pool of blood, would you help them? Or just walk on by...?

Depends. For the most part, I'd try to help them, definitely call an ambulance and make sure that they get medical attention if they are indeed 'lying in a pool of blood'.

Diffusion of responsibility and the bystander effect are sociological phenomenons that explain why people surprisingly do not go to the aid of one in need. A case on ACA recently where a man tried to help a lady who wanted a lift, was mugged and his car stolen by both the lady, and her accomplice. Shocking really.

There's a show on ABC called "What would you do" or something along those lines.

It's always interesting to watch how greedy and selfish many people have become, neglecting to help someone when they are on the ground hurt, or in the process of being mugged,

Yea, I thought of this instantly when I read the thread. Its actually quite an interesting show apart from its dramatic take on some topics.

Pretty sure the Good Samaritan Laws would protect them, depending on where they are.

If I saw a man being beaten up, or witnessed someone being shot, I wouldn't try and intervene, since they would be armed.
I would however, phone the police and give them the exact location, whilst at a safe distance from the attackers.

As for helping someone in need, it would have to depend on that particular person, I wouldn't help a convicted murderer or a paedophile etc. If it was a normal person, I'd like to think I'd do everything I could.... Though I haven't been in this situation yet.

It's really hard to say what you will actually do one you have the adrenaline pumping. But as a society we aren't taught any of these subjects, such as compassion, and generosity, or concentration. I think those things are important parts of life and should be taken as seriously as mathematics or English grammar.

I'd do my best to try help out, or if it was something I personally couldn't help with, would get other support, be it police, friends, or other randoms wanting to help.

If it was a close friend/ family I would help them up immediately.
However, if its a stranger, I've been told that I shouldn't help them up. Just Call the ambulance and wait next to them. This is because there was a law suit against a guy who tried to help a man in need.

i firmly believe in the Good Samaratin idea, not because i am religious but because i grew up listening to this story. Its like karma...the guys beating up an innocent man for instance will get whats coming to them so you dont need to beat em up or try anything stupid, though if i saw something like this i would probably fuck the guys up...but anyway they get what they deserve the best for someone to do at that point is help the man in need, and i definately without a doubt would.

just a little story for you guys, i remember when 2 guys beat up my grandfathers brother and tore half his pants off so they can steal his wallet even though the half they took had nothing in it, he was sent to the hospital had a few broken bones on his face and body. he healed fairly quickly and loooked at the bright side like he always does. next week we get a call from the cops saying they caught the 2 guys who did it and are gna spend 10 years minimum in jail.
