Why do you play Runescape?

I asked myself this question the other day and couldn't think of a logical explanation for it, think of all the negatives:
Very bad graphics.
Awful storyline.
The game consists of luck and no skill what so ever.
The community is very bad internally.
The customer service is beyond terrible.
Yet with all these negatives we all still play the game daily. Why do you play Runescape?

 

That's what we call an opinion.
Everyone has one, and that's exactly what makes people want to play Runescape. I disagree with everything you listed. The game is based entirely on skill, nothing in the game just happens, you need to train in order to be successful. I can name at least 50 Quests which I found to be entertaining. The graphics have improved substantially since the release of the game, and although they aren't the state-of-the-art , you should expect to get what you pay for and in this case, it's a free MMORPG ($6/month for membership isn't that hefty of a fee either). And yes, there are assholes in the game, just like any other game, as well as the real world, but that isn't the entire community. I've met plenty of great people on there. Although I've only had to use Customer Service a handful of times, every time they've been relatively quick in their response and helped me with my problem to the best of their ability.

If you skill legitimately it's just a matter of grinding, if your like the average Joe and bot well, there is no skill behind it, each boss takes less than a hour to master. Quests are down to personal preference so I won't argue with you there . Yeah sure it's a free game, if you enjoy the free to play content; which as I'm sure most people will agree, is very limited. I have been paying my membership since 2003 and it does add up over time. I'm basing my view on the customer service on my experience on when the mage training first opened, I lost a green phat to a glitch within the their and nothing was done about it and I went out of my way to get a reply.
None the less I still play the game after all this and can't point out a reason as to why I do.

 

Think I'm in the same boat as you man.

I only bot unless my friends are playing, unless my friends(irl ones) are on it's not fun at all, it will only be fun when they get rid of all the bots

 

It makes me $, it's a past time, and i've done it for about 7 years now- my childhood years.

Sythe wouldn't be here as it were today without Runescape.

 

I don't play runescape, only logging in to transfer GP.
In the beginning i played to get a high cb level and together with IRL friends.
After that i played to PK and thats what ive done for a couple of years (mostly f2p).
After that I merched and pked every now and then.

 

For something to do in spare time, hoping to eventually start making some decent gp to start selling it eventually

 

To merch and dice cause it's fun

 

MMORPG creators always focus on how to make their game addicting.
Example for runescape: There is always something to do for a reward.
Most of the time it takes hours upon hours to reach that reward.

There is no actual point in playing, there is no actual real accomplishment.
It's played because younger kids play it and enjoy it then grow up being addicted to it.
Most veterans lost love for the game early 2007 and only continued to play due to that thirst for more rewards.

It's how MMORPG's have become so successful.

You make money off of it.

 

The thing that's kept me playing for about a year here is the ability to make money off of it.

The main idea is how generally you can put in a good hour or two every so often and still be "decent" at the game, where on WoW you can't do anything really unless you devote at least an hour in one sitting to playing the game.

 

Killing the time while recovering from my injury. Ran outta movies, running outta books, so I've got barely anything else to do. (yup, can't really move >.>)

 

I played Runescape because my friends did and I wanted to have some fun. Now I have quit and selling my accounts here.
