I think it isn't always an indication, but it's a good guideline. however, the context of those grades needs to be looked at as well, did kid a get a 3.0 taking hard classes and kid b get a 4.0 taking nothing but gym? in that situation the grades dont reflect intelligence at all.

There are other situations grades wouldn't reflect, for instance, I rarely wanted to do work that was assigned if I already knew the subject matter. and so I didn't and my grades sometimes suffered from it.

I think that school grades reflect more on how hard someone works than on how smart they are. I don't really think there's a great deal of room for contention here.

I completley agree with this. In HS and still in college grades are just letters, representing absolutley nothing other than how much I cared that semester. I usually would get C's in classes because of not turning in my homework, yet I would get A's and B's on tests.

An example is in a college math class I was taking I only showed up for the tests, and I got A's on all of the tests, scoring the highest sometimes. My teacher still failed me for my lack of attendence.

    NO.

I got awful grades in High School because I wasted far too much time on RuneScape. I'm easily one of the more intelligent people from my graduating class, however.

Oh god there is so much I wanna say but I'll leave it to this. John may know how to find the area of a 3d pentagon but Joe can read a stock graph. Although John will get a better grade on the geometry test Joe knows more "life" skills a
    and could be called 'smarter'.

I do not believe schools are a good gauge of how intelligent a person is. The content taught in schools is usually only focused on preparing a student for standardized tests.

If people were allowed to pursue their interests instead of going to school, they would end up with more intellect.

No, it definitely doesn't. I fail classes every term but I have the potential to be a straight A student. Some people are just lazy and don't put their mind to it.

Contrary to most people on this thread, i do believe grades matter and that it is a direct indicator of intelligence. Tests are in place to measure ones capacity for knowledge and besides, what other ways are there to gauge how smart someone is..?

Grades - not really, but I do believe standardized tests are significantly better measures of intelligence.

There are different kinds of smarts which are subjectively and contextually defined and emphasised (with regards to importance).

People who do well at school are generally dedicated to their studies and in the case of exams and even assignments know how to 'play the game'.

I notice people above have mentioned they could be or have the potential to achieve well at school. Actions speak louder than words. Simply saying that you can/could/have the potential to do something doesn't mean it is so.

I don't really assume that it is.
There are many intellectual person who are probably too stubborn to be competent. They are potentially smart, you do not know what ideas are going on through their mind that might surpass the 'bookworm'. It's not based on that basis in my opinion. They will excel in a certain subject but will be ignored since they do not have these succeeding grades.
It's really complicated to explain, I'm terribly sorry.

    To put it blatantly no.

A lot of things contribute to getting good/bad grades.

Some people might be extremely intelligent but with exams they might suddenly freeze up.

Also like mentioned on the first page, a lot of people who never did well in education, eventually managed to create major advances in technology and science today.

    No.
There are things that aren't tested in every school. that do matter for how intelligent you are. If you're getting straight A's, you probably work hard to get everything done, and spend a lot of time at school. Some people aren't that bright, but spend hours of studying to get A's and B's, while others can do it all with 15 minutes of studying a day, but are too lazy to care.

In my opinion, school exams aren't 100% accurate for measuring the IQ or "smartness" of someone.
Because they could be "smart" in a certain field and not another for example, and sometimes just studying hard gets you the A's, so it has nothing to do with being smart or not.

Incorrect. Getting A's DOES have something to do with being smart, it's just not a 100% positive relationship.

To be honest, any kids who claim to be "smart" yet get bad grades really aren't "smart" as good grades are not difficult for "smart" people to achieve even with minimal effort.

If a person can get high grades in a test, with minimal effort they are probably what I'd deem 'smart'.

However, what do you classify as 'smart'? Being good at all-rounded stuff, or what?
I have 2 autistic friends, and both of them get extremely low marks, however I'd call them smart as they both seem to specialise in one subject (one of them is good at Art, and the other History). I think this makes them smart.

In some cases yes, grades do reflect ones' abilities. In others, it reflects how well a person applies themselves in an area or subject. A person could have the potential to make all "A's" but make "B's" because of priority problems, or just the lack of interest in school. So in most cases, grades do not effect how smart a person is, but rather how much they care.

School is more about memorizing given information either via a teacher or a textbook and then re-applying that given knowledge to an assignment and/or a test/exam. It isn't exactly a good gauge of someone's intellectual ability. If anything it is better suited to gauge a person's working memory and work ethic.

Personall story, I for one tbh do not like nor care about school. Yes I have learned from it what I need to learn but I do not think their needs to be the grades 11th or 12th i think its a time for slacking. I do not do good in school on grades because I dont try but I know I am extremely smart and if I needed to be or do good on somthing hard or challenging I am sure I could do it. I just dont have the drive to get good grades so no I do not think that school is a good gauge for kids intelligence.
