    Debate: Console "Jailbreaking/Modding/etc."

Basically how do you feel about console breaking. This does not include network hacking "aka PsN Network".

I think that what Sony and Microsoft are trying to do are futile efforts to make their consumers stop jailbreaking. They should just give it up already, yes i know that disk burning is bad and hurts the publishers/developers but this isn't that kind of debate. To stop their consumers from jailbreaking or putting homebrew software onto their systems is like telling consumers "like me" that we don't own this 400$ game console that we bought, that we just have a license to it that can be revoked at any given time. I say NO, this is my money and i'll do whatever the hell i want to do to my hardware. Does it hurt to allow Linux OS running on the PS3? Nope. Stubborn company executives are trying to ruin our fun and advancements in homebrew.

Innovation is what made this world advance. Giant corporations attempting to censor such innovators are merely doing so out of thought of their own pockets. If they embraced the fact that their systems could be bettered with the creative and crafty innovators, then it would be a much better society we live in.

Laws won't stop it from happening, it just censors creativity and productivity of the minds that brought us everything.

My Wii has a modchip, and I do not see it as a bad thing.

Software development is dirt cheap. A work colleague of mine recently recreated a piece of software his Uni bought for $80,000,000. It didn't take him very long to recreate it, either.

While someone might say that is different than game development, it really isn't. They do the same thing in Uni as above, recreating (simple) games from scratch in a matter of hours. Imagine what even a Uni student could do in a few months.

People should be allowed to jailbreak, but doing so should void their warranties.

iPhone/iPod jailbreaking, modded consoles are illegal because you're getting stuff that's paid for free.

Linux on a ps3, no harm in that tbh.

I think it should be provoked to be honest. Why wouldn't we want people making new things and bettering current technology?

Well, like Revolight say. They should allow these things to happen legally. But once it happens, your warranties are void.

I think they should allow it but if anything happens it on you. Some people jail break their equipment just so they can run pirated content. I think piracy is wrong but you can't stop people. They should know right from wrong.

Most people and companies that are against jailbreaking or modding are against it not because they want to control you, but because 90% of the people who jailbreak or mod things do so, so they can do illegal things such as pirating games, burning and selling games, etc.

If you own the device, than you should be allowed to do whatever you want with it. Once the device is in your hands, companies who manufactured the device shouldn't be able to dictate what you choose to do with it.

I don't think they'll ever be able to legally stop you from modifying the console itself. The only thing they want to stop from happening is you going online with these mods, and you pirating games. If you're playing offline with homebrew and not pirating games I'm pretty sure they couldn't give two shits. If you expect them to let you online or whatever with the mods then that's retarded, they have a terms of service for a reason.. once you break it, they can do whatever they want to your membership on their service.

Also they discourage modding because they will get 1,000 morons calling every hour at their tech support who didn't do the mod correctly and expect the company to help them/reimburse them out of their own retarded mistake. This is why PC gaming is the best. YOU DONT NEED TO MOD ANYTHING. Lawl.

As far as jailbreaking for piracy (loading copied CDs, ROM's, etc.), the companies have every right to try and stop people from doing it, so they can make more money (not that I blame people for trying to pirate). On the other hand, modding a system for other purposes shouldn't be (and generally isn't) a problem, except for voiding the warranty. You bought the hardware, you do with it what you want.

On a related note, has anyone else seen the projects on Ben Heck's blog and forums? There are some pretty sweet portable Nintendo 64s there, as well as lots of other stuff.

Most companies hate jailbreaking, modding or whatever you want to call it because it almost ultimately leads to a loss of revenues in digital content whether this is movies, music or games because modding usually leads to some form of piracy. And so for the aforementioned I do support the anti-modding stance corporations are taking however corporations preventing harmless modifications like running Linux on a PS3 is unreasonable.
