Why would they even do that? That's the first time I've heard VALVe is not just after making money. I want my €20 back though, lol.
But I'm guessing people won't care if they hack or not now, since they can always just make a new Steam account. Unless there are like F2P and P2P servers, which there definitely should be.

Probably an ad campaign. If one of their main shooters becomes free, more people will get Steam. If more people get Steam, more people will buy their other games as well, thus a flow-on effect. I'd suppose they did some market research and figured they'd get more money this way.

There might, but if you bought the game for $20 then you get some premium bonuses and a nice hat.

    Read it here http://www.teamfortress.com/freetoplay/faq.php

EDIT: @tripn - adding on to what Swan said, yes, more people will get steam and people who pay money get premium bonuses and if you really enjoy the game free to play, you will enjoy it more when you have those premium features.

they also have micro transactions where you can buy hats and guns in game for money so they make money that way too.

but you can randomly find these items while playing so there's no real need to buy these if you don't want to.

They're probably going to get more than their money back through the increased Mann Co. Store sales. Also, from what I understood it's not just 'currently' but 'forever'.

Damnit, I bought the game a while ago for hte full price, and now it's free. The "benefits" people get from buying it are very minuscule, and don't even make up for the fact that I paid for it, lol.

Valve probably realized they were making more money from backpack items than the game itself, so by making it free they increase it's exposure so they'll end up making more money than before.

I believe they made TF2 free because they were making more money from the Mann. Co Store than actual sales of the game. Thus, by making it free they're giving many more people access to the Mann. Co Store, hoping that they'll purchase things.

I bought TF2 in 2009 for $30, and got about 1500 hours of play out of it, so I'm not concerned that they made it free. :noworry:
