    Solution to discontinued items

Many discontinued items are now above the maximum cash limitation. This prevents them from being traded on the Grand Exchange, which allows for price manipulation by the few that own them.

What I suggest is a "stock-split" of discontinued items. Every person that owns a discontinued item would get a X to 1 split. For example, each person that owned a blue party hat would then have four for each one they owned. This could potentially create more wealth for owners, while then allowing them to be traded freely.

    Discuss.

All the same. Partyhat owners already have everything else but a riciculous amount of rares. They would just start hoarding all phats, nothing would change.

This wouldn't help. Players would just be hoarding more of the partyhats.

Why not just increase the limitation?

They can't. 2,147,483,647 is the largest number or whatever in java.

Are you suggesting a reverse amalgamation?

Who cares that the rich can manipulate their toys.

It's not like a phat, or a christmas cracker did the normal player any harm.

Because Runescape is 32-bit. It'd need some reworking from scratch.

Making the rich more rich won't help anything in my opinion. It could easily destroy the economy.

I don't see why everybody thinks there's something broken about discontinued items. Those people work/bot/pay good for those items, they should be given some sort of reward for that. Capitalism at its finest.

I think that that would work, surprisingly.

If Jagex started to dabble with the rares market, a lot of people would become scared and sell of their rares for something more stable like gp.

Basic manipulation is what you're talking about.
It's all the same with the "big" merchants on runescape.
More money for the rich, less for the poor.

Woutercross was given 15bil a few days ago, someone quit and gave him 4b gp (2b x2) and a partyhat set.

Who is Woutercross? And can someone go into further detail about the whole 2 bill being the largest number in Java? I mean had jagex come out and said this? With the incredible game that has been created it seems as though a multi million dollar company could find a way to make a higher number...

    Solution to discontinued items

    Sure

The above posters are right; it is a Java limitation.

But just to expand on what they said...
Java is run primarily by variables, which include booleans, bytes, chars, doubles, floats, ints, longs, and shorts. The bolded words (bytes, ints, longs, and shorts) are the variables that encompass all integer values (positive or negative numbers without a decimal value). Each of these four variable types has a Width in Bits, and a Range of values that it can be assigned to. These are as follows:
    Byte : 8 Bit Width : -128 to 127
    Short : 16 Bit Width : -32,768 to 32,767
    Int : 32 Bit Width : -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647
    Long : 64 Bit Width : -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807

As Dangerousd777 said, Runescape is run on a 32 Bit (width) Java platform. As you can see, the values that can by assigned to 32 Bit Integer variables (ints) can range from -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647. Since you can't have negative RSGP, the amount of coins you can have ranges from 1 to 2,147,483,647.

I suspect that they will not change this because Runescape is meant to be available for all who have a computer. From what I understand, 32 Bit programs can run on 64 Bit systems, but not the other way around. Were Jagex to change the type of variables they use to Longs, they would have to make Runescape exclusively for 64 Bit systems.

GP is the farthest thing from stable...You'd be better off keeping the items that can't be produced. People buy gold in real life because it can't be printed.

As nice as this would be, the GE/Jagex does not function in the same way that real life ownership shares do.

Why not? I don't see why it wouldn't (for items that can't be produced anymore). For example, if one person owned every single partyhat in the game and refused to sell them, the demand for the item would be so far above the supply that the price would skyrocket. Right?

Thanks a lot for the in depth explanation FibofAllFibs. I get it now. Has jagex ever mentioned the problem of people having more gold than the cap allows?

In that case, couldn't Jagex make the coins unsigned and double the max limit?
