    Strippers, degraded or empowered?

well, I was looking at the psychology behind strippers, the crowd and the situation..

most thing this is degrading to wemen, it lowered social values and its wrong.
now, as some of this may be true lets put it into a perspective you may not have considered.

let me introduce you to Bob. Bob works 6 days a week getting crap for money, he isn't much of a charmer when it comes to wemen, he isn't so great at art or playing guitar or anything spectacular. Wemen never look twice at him in clubs and he is totally alone. He goes to the strip club to tip wemen his hard earned money of the week because it makes him feel better about himself. he has a good time, releases some stress and goes home feeling like a million bucks.

Now, people feel bad for alot of strippers. But i've known a few exotic dancers and its not what it is portrayed, the job is long hours, physically greuling and takes a great deal of coordination and practice. She comes home with 400 in tips every night, all the eyes are on her and Bob gives her money and she makes him feel wanted.

Who is really being degraded? who is being empowered? My opinion is it goes both ways, the woman is the most saught out thing in the room, Bob is a well paying customer. Everybody walks out happy.

what do you guys think on this?

I doubt Bob walks out really 'happy'. I'd feel bad.

Bob comes out happy if he's gotten what he wants, though.
Bob decided to spend his money on the stripper, he made the choice.

By the way, it is not "wemen". It is women or woman.

I do not agree it is degrading, sounds dumb but I have seen a documentary on this. Many strippers see it as nothing more then a job, and repeat that same phrase repeatedly. It is a job, and they know what they are doing, when they go home they have a family, some are even going to school at the same time. So in my opinion from our point of view it may be degrading but from theres its nothing bad.

    Strippers, degraded or empowered?

That is true, but for women as a whole it seems to be degrading. I know I have talked to my girlfriend about it, and she is very against strippers and porn and things like that. Now I completely understand it is a job, and for many strippers it is a much needed source of income, and they do not find it degrading to themselves, but as a whole I do find it degrading. This is something that can't be proved or disproved, however, and is all opinion.

    Strippers, degraded or empowered?

People only look upon the job of a stripper as degrading because that is our social and cultural norm. Due to the massive changes we've experienced in the 20-21st century most people have started to question this norm. I for one think that as long as the stripper loves what she does and the customer "bob" is happy, they are both empowered and both parties walk away winners.

The body is an amazing thing. Why not show it off if you have something to show off?

I don't think it's degrading, its just a choice they make or in some countries - forced into making.

You're showing off your body, which is great if you have a nice one. I think it's pretty awesome that they can make money off other people looking at them. It's not like the strippers are having sex for money - just simply showing off what they have.

    Strippers, degraded or empowered?

this is all completely opinion based.
as far as im concerned, if it makes you happy and it aint bothering me then go for it. No one is obligated to watch a stripper or watch someone have sex or watch porn or whatever. Its a choice. and no one has a place to judge theirs.

edit: and also to any women who think its degrading and shit... maybe stop crying about the bad name they give women and start trying to give women a good name if thats what your so worried about. You dont do anything for the image of women by sitting around complaining when your not trying to fix anything yourself

    Strippers, degraded or empowered?

how about both bob and the stripper come out feeling degraded.

seriously, a stipper telling herself that she is being empowered by her work is just trying to rationalize a bad situation to get rid of any cognitive dissonance they may be harboring.

for those who do not see it as degrading:
these women sell arguably the most intimate part of their bodies to complete strangers for something so shallow and materialistic as money.
these women will arguably never feel real intimacy even when they are having sex with a man they love wholeheartedly, because that area of their bodies has been stripped of all its original innocence and virtue in order to make a quick buck

    are you stupid???
stop crying about the bad name they give them??? jesus, the op asked for their opinions on the matter. get your head out of your ass.

for allt hose that say it is a choice, and therefore it is not degrading

what if i made the choice to run around covered in my own feces. it would certainly be degrading and of my own volition.

    Strippers, degraded or empowered?

You're taking a degrading substance and covering yourself with it thus making the act degrading. Undressing and dancing isn't degrading it's a job they choose to do and it makes other people feel better, also they make a hell of alot more than other people do so they are being compensated for the extra effort.

it is only considered degrading in our society, just as exposing your naked body to stranger is.

    Strippers, degraded or empowered?

The problem is that some women view their sexual appeal as one of few sources of empowerment available to them. They may enjoy the attention they receive, and may even be happy stripping, but it's still degrading in that they've subconsciously resigned themselves to the belief that their primary worth is in their appearance.
