    Suck.

    I'm 21.
    My fiancee is 19.

I went to WinCo (A super grocery store) and I was going to buy a Smirnoff Partypak and some Crown Royal.

I get to the register, the lady asks me for my ID, I show it, happily.
Then she turned to my fiancee and asked for her ID, we said she doens't have any.

They wouldn't sell me alcohol because I had my fiancee(19 yr old) with me.
Yet I was going to pay with my debit card, with my name on it.

This has never happened before, and I've bought before with her around me, wtf changed?

It was probably at the clerk's discretion, not because of a law. I go into the LCBO/Beer Store (in ontario those are the only places you can purchase alcohol, but they're everywhere) all the time when people buy alc for me and I've never had a problem.

    It really pissed me off.
The Crown was only 15 bucks, and the smirnoff was 10bucks.
Ended up going to some shitty grocery store and paying 20 for Crown and 20 for smirnoff.

I think that all laws limiting the age at which you can buy alcohol are completely redundant and useless. I'm 15 and I can just go and buy whatever I want from my local university campus without anyone batting an eyelid. Anyway, whats the point of a law being there when just about every person who it is designed to 'protect' is able to easily break it? You just end up persecuting legitimate people such as yourself who are well within their rights to buy and consume alcohol. The person who served you was probably either an arsehole or just very keen to keep their job, just avoid going into that particular shop when she's on the till.

That is a bit ridiculous. I would have complained to the manager.

This. Call and complain if you have the name of the employee.

Well, in Australia the legal drinking age is 18, meaning some people here are able to buy it for others even before they graduate, hence it's particularly easy to get drunk in Australia whilst underage, provided you have the money to pay said senior students.

As previously stated, these kinds of things are at the discretion of the person by whom you are being served. A lot of liquor stores around here will sell to you even if you just look 18 or above (meaning, me being 6" 7' and all, can most likely buy if it I'm not in school uniform). A lot of them won't serve you at all if you don't have ID. In all honesty, you can't blame the clerk. They were just following the laws that are already there.

The laws are intended to stop underage drinking and with good reason, considering high use of alcohol from young ages is incredibly detrimental to mental development. People'll try to argue it as much as they want, but the fact of the matter is said people aren't neurologists. I agree that the laws are rather ineffective and are really just a stop-gap measure, but then again, they can't be strictly enforced by the nature of the humans who serve you, and they can't be removed lest we let society start degrading from young ages. You can argue it as much as you want, and I may seem somewhat hypocritical for this having been drunk several times before, but I personally agree with the laws in place, as they're there for a valid reason. They're annoying, but its the truth.

In some States this is actually the law. They do require everyone with you to be 21. This has happened to me in multiple stores in 3 different states. So before you call and complain, you might want to have second thoughts before you make a fool of yourself. Just have your fiancée wait in the car, or have her go into a different line while you're buying the alcohol.

They do that at Walgreens. Since a lot of people end up buying shit for minors, they have us card everyone in the group.

    But I don't card anybody. I don't care..

Something similar happened to me. My cousin is 24 and lives in Oregon. At the time I think he was 21 or 22. He was visiting us in California. We went to Stater Brothers and got a bunch of stuff. He also got a 12 pack. When we got there the lady at the register asked for his ID. In his ID he was like 16 and it has a small chip of it cut off but it is legit and he is of age. The lady tells him "Sorry we don't allow out of state ID's to be used, we have too many kids using fake ones." The next day he went with my dad and my cousin had no problem buying beer with his ID and the manager was at the register this time. They asked if they have problems with fake ID's he said no, and they said that they have no problem accepting out of state ID's.

I think it depends on the cashier.

Wow lol I didn't even notice that.

It's true, you gotta be 18 to join the army/etc
But you gotta be 21 to "party"
    Kinda sad lol.

I think it's completely reasonable. It's like if a 21 year old walked into the shop with his 15 year old friend and bought a crate of beer, they wouldn't let you. If you ever asked your older friends to buy alcohol for you you wouldn't go in the shop and stand next to them while they did it.
