I'm getting tired of reading threads about rappers, MC's and mainstream american screamo/emo stuff like Bullet for my valentine, avenged sevenfold, august burns red.

I'm talking REAL metal. Like Dimmu borgir, Graveworm, necrophobic, burzum.

Well, what are you favorite bands?

 

Back from when I used to listen to metal: As Blood Runs Black, Cannibal Corpse, Cannabis Corpse, Amputated (for fun), Extreme Noise Terror, Suicide Silence, and Gorgoroth.

 

Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Van Halen, Tool, Opeth, Ozzy Osbourne, Dio, Metallica (before Black Album. More specifically, the songs Mustaine wrote), Death, so on.

I think a lot of bands tend to bastardise the term 'music' in metal. They make songs with the mindset of "oh, I want to be awesome" or "oh, that sounds cool, whatever" and they don't really write much worth listening to. You listen to greats like Iron Maiden, Dream Theater etc. and you can hear just how definitively important the instrumentals are, and generally a story or deeper meaning behind the lyrics. The instrumentals complement the lyrics of the song, so it's not really "oh, that sounds cool" but rather riffs, melodies and so on were written to complement the actual song.

Personally I think that's why there's a dividing line between people who like metal and people who hate metal, with a very small middleground; a lot of people / bands just don't think about what the song actually means, and they make it generic.

I used to listen to Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and As I Lay Dying. Now I've moved on to stuff like BMTH..

 

Suicide Silence, Bring me the Horizon, Asking Alexandria, and some German bands like: We butter the Bread with Butter, Remmstein, and Arsonists Get All the Girls. Hope I helped

My favourite is death metal that has melody and soul...
Bands like Insomnium, Opeth, Death, Noumena, Gojira...

Other than that I enjoy pretty much anything by Devin Townsend, Agalloch, Isis, Katatonia, Anathema, My Dying Bride...

But none of this crap like BMTH and -core garbage.

Oh man. It's like looking into a mirror! I've said this for yeeeaaars! I'm totally with you 100%.

 

My most favourite bands right now are Dream Theater and Opeth. Listening to these two a shit load. Now and then I'll listen to some Death, Tool, Metallica and Pink Floyd too.

death is meh, the vocalist sounds like he's trying to hit puberty for about the 9th time. Although a few of their songs are pleasurable. Crystal mountain is by far my favorite.
