A private prison is a prison which is run privately but contracted by the government. For example, they may pay you $4000 per month for each prisoner you keep. Now, that number is probably nowhere near correct, it's just an example.

    Things to keep in mind:

Owning your own prison doesn't allow you to treat your prisoners in a way that violates federal law.

With the correct resources for startup, this could potentially be a multi-million dollar per YEAR operation for an individual.

    -

I personally feel that they should be illegal. To think that our government is capable of regulating every private prison is absurd. Unfair treatment of prisoners is easily possible in a system as flawed as this one.

Aside from unfair treatment, or people making money off of something they shouldn't even be allowed to do for free, it's just another form of slavery. Consider this: A steel manufacturing company opens a private prison, where it houses a few thousand prisoners. Not only do they not have to pay these thousands of potential workers, they GET PAID for allowing the U.S. government to house prisoners in their institution.

Does any of this sound right? If you were writing a set of rules for the government, and somebody suggested a method of hiring workers which PAYS you to allow them to work for you without you having to pay them, would you allow it?

my sympathy is void in general, so when it comes to prisoners - tough luck

however i think profiting off of their labour is a brilliant idea

This idea is pretty logical. But then again unfair treatment would suck so government would have to regulate what happens in there.

I find it perfectly fair, they should work in prison, not just sit there and cost alot of money for the government.

With the overcrowding prisons we have in the US I would say that having private prisons is step in the right direction.

These private prisons don't hold the really dangerous inmates but instead are designed to house low risk inmates (i.e potheads) which are the ones crowding the prisons in the first place.

The best solution in my opinion would be to have all of the people who are convicted on smaller things like possession be punished with hard labor. That way you can get some use out of the prisoners like having them clean the streets.

I agree that it's fair for them to do labor. That labor, however, should benefit the government and the American people in general, not one man's private business.

I'm pretty sure the prisoners make body armour for US soldiers.

Also, i strongly disagree with private prisons. It makes you question why the US has such a poor rate of rehabilitation. Why would you want to rehabilitate prisoners, if you can get them to come back in a few months/years time and make you even more money?

Also, they are effectively slave labour. How this is justifyable in many peoples minds is beyond me. Yes, they are prisoners, but they are still human beings. The idea of a human right is that you have the right to it no matter what.

    A Private Prison Is:

A private prison, jail, or detention center is a place in which individuals are physically confined or interned by a third party that is contracted by a local, state or federal government agency. Private prison companies typically enter into contractual agreements with local, state, or federal governments that commit prisoners and then pay a per diem or monthly rate for each prisoner confined in the facility.

    And yes, they are legal.

All you've done is copied an article off of Wikipedia (I know this because I've read it) and added in that private prisons are legal. Of course they're legal! They're government-contracted. If you aren't going to contribute anything to the topic at hand, don't post.
