This task would like you to investigate one area of public speaking. This could be:

• a political speech (Obama, Martin Luther King Jr)
• a TV presenter (Jamie Oliver, T4 Presenters)
• Radio presenter (DJs)
• Sports commentaries (John Motson, Andy Gray, Jamie Redknapp)
• a teacher

Evidence

Evidence can come from any of the above. You can access most of the above from websites like www.youtube.com, www.channel4od.com, www.skusports.com

You will need to transcibe your evidence so that you can analyse it in the assessment.

The Task

Investigate a type of public talk, such as a political speech.

The analysis

• Consider the use of standard and non-standard English.
• Are there any examples of persuasive language? Where and why?
• Who is the target audience? Does this impact on the type of language that is used?
• How do they use language to engage the audience?
• Do they alter the tone of ther voice? why? Is it effective?
• Do they use certain words to demonstrate their power or authority? e.g parents might call you by your full name to indicate you are in trouble. A manger might use an employee's first name to show he/she is approachable and friendly. Why does a teacher aim to lean their pupils name within a week?

Stay focused. Write a lot about a little.​

Speeches are easy to analyze, especially after you've studied oratory/rhetoric at a College level.
