    Military ?

Ok to start i am only 15 right now turn 16 in 14 days :)

I have this weird feeling for along time now and it has transformed into something else. I have always wanted to be in the military since before third grade and thats just what i remember. But it has went from this is what i want to be, this is what i want to do. I want to be like my father, and serve on the front lines, but there has always been a fear, would i ever come home. The past week or so I have not spent more then a few minutes of the day but thinking of the army. But instead of having that fear i just keep thinking like i want to join, and i want to be deployed, and i have no care what happens when i am there. Its almost like I want to be killed overseas and i can not stop thinking about it. Any thoughts on this is this a totaly random thought or should i be worried ?

    im in the army bro...
and there is more to army life than just being deployed.
and chances are you wont be leaving the desert in a box, just sayin.
if u want to serve thats awesome go for it... pick air force (dont flame me) they get treated the best. I am in the army, twin bro in marines, and i have friends in both navy and airforce and airforce is way to go.

But its whatever u want... u have plenty of time to decide.
P.s. if u choose to do that go to college first, dont be making pennies being enlisted like me.. unless u want to be enlisted.

I've had the exact same feeling as you.

But I wanted to join the airforce, think of this though.

    - You will miss out on all parties + big events back home
    - Not as much 'fun' girls etc;
    - Your family will be going without you
    - Will you ever get a wife? Will all the good women be taken by the time you're finished your services?
    - What if you die?

I have always thought it would be interesting to join the army. I would never do it though, my parent would not let me if I wanted either. However if there were a draft or something I wouldn't be too upset about having to join.

Personally I do not think the army is for me but I know a lot of people that have joined the army and it has been the best decision they have ever made in their life. It is a really great thing for some people, there are many benefits to it and I would assume it would give you a great sense of pride. I know you said you did not care if you were to die over there, but you should there is so much in life to live for. If you were to join hopefully you could realize this and do a great job fighting overseas and realize that you can be doing a great thing for your country and living a great strong life. If it is something you really want to do I say go for it.

People from the army that come to our school to give talks have 2 things in common.

    They all LOVE their work.
They all know that the toll is put more on their loved ones than themselves.

My advice, if you love it go for it, but you'll need a strong stomach and the ability to handle atrocities.

    Military ?

Im sorry but the public has a very wrong perception of the military. Is the public seriously that indoctrinated with war that they think the military is all about war?

i will answer every single one of these questions

    1. party life will increase, trust me. if your 21+ alot of people will be going out to clubs and bars and such
if your 21- there are so many 21+ that it is damn near impossible to get alcohol. in many barracks on the weekends have gigantic parties.
Ive heard stories of 3 story tall beer bongs
    2. Not as much fun girls? are you serious? if you have any skills with women whatsoever you will have no problem pickin up girls
    3. most people are glad to be away from their family. its a nice break. and when your older you dont need them.
    4. why cant you be married in the military? tons of people are. yes there is a higher divorce rating but also there are people that get married just for convenience (you get paid more $ if married)
    5. if u die then u die for your country and you get 400k sent to your family. easy as that.

there are your answers, and though the answers may vary slightly base to base, in general its all the same.

@ this im going to say.. what a joke.
First, i want to say dont trust anything a recruiter says. they will say they love their job just so you join and it looks better on their ncoer (their evaluation)
Second, Able to hand the atrocities? Just because you go to the sandbox doesnt mean you see people with their limbs blown off. I know people that get deployed and never go outside the wire (aka fobbits). Plus who cares ive seen people die and i was like.. who gives a f***.
The military is not just about war.. its called garrison, and it is where we spend most our time.

The people that come to our school are from the highest ranks in the Australian Defense Force, they are not recruiters, they were there to just give us an insight as to life at the top of the military ranks.

If your any good 'soldier' you would most certainly witness comrades and friends perish. You misunderstand as well, just because you want to be a 'fobbit' doesn't mean someone you might befriend goes outside the wire, and gets killed. That is an atrocity that you have to handle.

The military is not just about war, however in current times where soldiers are deployed to maintain peace there is still a degree of danger which must be factored in. Just because you are desensitized to death doesn't mean others can be as well.

Well i cant tell you a single thing about australia military... i dont know anything about it.

i dont understand how having friends die or witnessing atrocities makes you a "good soldier". you can be a fantastic soldier but never be deployed.

A good soldier generally makes friends with his fellow comrades. He doesn't have to be deployed, he doesn't have to see his friends die, but that doesn't mean it won't affect him, to know that his friends have died in combat.

Imagine if you had a job for 20 years, and every 4-5 years one of the friends you made died. Not many people would be able to cope with that constant loss, however in the army, you will just have to learn to accept it in 99.99% of the cases and positions.

You still have at least 2 years to go but if your opinion about the army doesn't change then sure, go for it! :)

The chances of dying in war these days is lower than you'd ever think tbh, so don't be scared (if you are scared)

Not scared i just don't see dieing as a limiting factor in the situation. As for making friends in the military, i spent about a year and a half in JROTC befor i moved, and the friends are definitely different that you make inside of class rather then outside. There is a different level of respect, and at least in my case i noticed i am closer to them possibly because of the chain of command, always working together to make this or that better overall. Idk i just had the question am i crazy for not caring about the possibility of death.

maybe i didnt get my exact point across.
I meant that when people say military they think war... they fail to see that military is not just war. there is tons and tons of stuff going on behind the scenes day to day in garrison

Analyze all the details and seek out what is best for YOU. But always make sure what might be affected can ruin future plans that you may want. Everything in life is a risk and some are well worth it but a risk is a risk. I never liked the army as I see their is no need for armys. Proud to say that back home my country does not have a standing army.

I myself, am in the same position as you.
I am in the Delayed Entry Program for the Marine Corps. The entire time while I was contemplating my enlistment the thought was always in mine, and my parents head. "What if you don't come back".
I have spent a lot of time thinking about this and have come to decide that if I do die in a combat zone, I gave my life fighting for the United States and to protect our country.
On the side note, I also was like you in the sense that since I was little I have always wanted to be in the services.
When you get a chance, the best thing for you to do would be to discuss you're thoughts with your parents, and get in touch with a recruiter.
The recruiter can answer most of the questions you have, but you have to know the recruiters will tell you what you want to hear, but won't directly lie to you. Just keep that in mind. You have to be prepared to be owned by the country for at least 4 years depending on what path you plan on taking

My parents are very aware that i want to join the military, they have always pushed the Air Force due to my knowledge of aviation, and the fact i was in taking a course to get my pilots license. And to another poster above i did not quote I do have that feeling like at least then my death would mean something, and it is something i could be extremely proud of.

Well its all really what you want to do. To be able to fly in any of the branches of service you'd have to go through the officer program

As other people have said USAF is the best way to go, my cousins husband was in the Army and he did 2 tours and said it wasn't fun (But that was right after 9/11). As well as one of my best friends was a Marine out of highschool in 2005 who was shot twice in Afganistan. Now back to Air Force, my ex girl friend was in there during the whole 2 years we were together and she never got sent anywhere. They seem to get treated pretty well and living on base wasn't that bad, just annoying when people were like "oh he's a civilian" to her.
