Alcohol and Partying - How you can save someones life

Malakadang's Informative Guide to Alcohol and Partying - How you can save someones life.

    Introduction

Many people are misguided and misconceived about alcohol, specifically in the case of a party and when people pass out. This guide is an exceptionally important as I will remove the misconceptions you guys have and quite possibly help you save your friends life if such events occur.

    What am I talking about?

Ever been to a party where someone passes out? This guide is aiming specifically at us party goers but also has tips on how to keep yourself and others safe.
Before you say, I don't go to parties I don't drink. That's not the point of this guide; the point is when you start going out to parties which you will, what happens if your friend passes out? You don't know and this guide will tell you what to do how to do it and probably more importantly WHAT NOT TO DO.

    Common Misconceptions

Misconception #1 - Bread sobering people up.

I'm sure all of you would've heard this. Very logical actually, people think that bread will absorb all the alcohol and in turn you will become sober!
This is wrong, bread does not sober people up, and it is actually involuntary manslaughter. Yes that's right, you could kill someone if you feed them too much bread when they're drunk. This is very important, when you feed someone bread when they're drunk they can choke, bread is very hard to swallow when you are drunk. Force feeding someone bread is something you should NOT EVER do, it will eventually lead to them suffocating, choking, and ultimately dieing.

Recap - DO NOT feed drunk/out of it people bread it can kill them and does nothing.

Misconception #2 - Having a cold shower sobers someone up.

This is another common misconception for reasons I'll never know. Having a cold shower does not sober someone up, all you are left with is a cold miserable drunk person who is now closer to Hypothermia. This seems harmless, but it is actually very dangerous. Why? What stops the water from flying everywhere in the shower? Glass, what happens when a drunken person falls over? They'll smash into the glass, what happens when glass slices open your neck? They die. It is probably the most dangerous place a drunk person can be; a bathroom. Drunken people find it hard to stand up straight, if you lead a drunk person to a place where if they fall over they will either kill themselves or severely injure themselves then you better have a reason I cannot think of.

Recap - Cold Showers do not sober drunk people up; it just leaves them wet drunk and miserable. DO NOT bring a drunken person into a bathroom; there is no reason to, other than to kill them.

Misconception #3 - Lying them down on a bed will sober them up.

This seems very logical, lying a drunken person down so they'll eventually fall asleep and wake up with a hangover seems like a great idea right? Wrong. This can and too often does lead to the death of someone. You see, when you lay someone down on their back and their drunk what's to stop them from throwing up? Nothing, so where does that vomit go? It stays in their throat and ultimately the person drowns in their own puke. 'Another possibility is that if they become unconscious and it is almost impossible to differentiate between an unconscious and sleeping person they're tongue roll into a position where it clogs their airways and they will suffocate to death' (thanks bubba fuzz). While this is probably the most understandable misconception it is actually one of the most fatal. I repeat DO NOT lay someone flat on their back if they're drunk, instead lay them in the recovery position facing you so you can monitor them.

Recap - DO NOT lie someone flat on their back when they are drunk, they will throw up in their own mouth and eventually drown to death in their own vomit.

Great, so what should we do?

Here are several steps you should do if you're looking after your drunk friend.

Never leave them alone and monitor them.

I think I need to make this clear, I'm referring to severely drunken people, they've either passed out or are so near passing out it's not funny. I'm not talking about someone that has had their judgement clouded.

You should never ever leave a drunken person alone, especially your friend. You have to remember being drunk is a moderately minor problem, being alcoholically poisoned is a life threatening problem; let's not forget Alcohol is a toxic poison.

Monitoring a person is very easy, simply sit them down in a chair facing you and watch them. The most important indicator is this:

    - Can they sit upright in a chair? If not is their chin hitting their chest?

I cannot find a picture, but basically tilt your head as far down as you leaving a relatively straight back.
If a drunken person does this and has their chin touch their chest it means that an ambulance must be called.

I'm being serious, when someone can no longer support themselves even in a chair it means they are either alcoholically poisoned or borderline. This can also constrict their airways and could kill them, forget about having them walk they'll have troubles standing up.

If however they're chin doesn't hit their chest but they are clearly out of it, then you can put them in the recovery position facing you, then simply re assure them, keep them comfortable, keep them warm. I'll talk about keeping someone warm, drunk people don't like having blankets put around them, but sober people do not like Hypothermia. If you reside in a cold climate make sure to keep a drunken person relatively warm, failure to do so can result in Hypothermia as they're body heat will drop if they're drunk.

If however you are in doubt, call an ambulance or at the VERY MINIMUM someone that is medically trained. If you thought that a robber had robbed your house you'd probably call the cops right? At the very least you'd check around the house. This is no different; failure to do this can result in death if a person is severely drunk.

What can I do to prevent myself from becoming drunk like this?

There are 2 things you can and should do every time you go out to party, or plan to drink.

Eating a fist full of food 1 and a half hours before you go out.

Probably wouldn't eat those cookies but that's roughly the portion size.

First to clear another misconception about this. This will not stop you from getting drunk; this simply stops you from becoming violently ill. Remember alcohol is a poison, so expect to get a bit sick. It's like drinking 1 litre of acetic acid, it is poisonous and it will make you sick.

Now eating a fist full of food is a great thing to do because:

Your stomach is where your food/drink is kept, and alcohol penetrates into your blood stream, hence causing you to become drunk. What does food do? Food is like a brick wall, it simply delays the alcohol from entering your blood stream too quickly. If you want to interpret this as stopping you from getting drunk? Then go do this once drink a bottle of whiskey and see if you get drunk? Chances are you'll get drunk an hour later which leaves you more time to drink and you'll get even more drunk!

Remember not to eat food too early, as it'll just simply digest.

Drinking water then alcohol then water then alcohol.

When you drink, you desperately want to urinate as the alcohol pushes the water down if you like. You don't want to have no water in your body, so to combat this have a drink of water before each glass of alcohol. It's not harmful and it keeps you hydrated something that alcohol does not.

Thank You for reading this guide, I really hope I helped you guys as I'm sure 99.99% of you guys will at one point in your life go to a party if you haven't been to one already, and probably 10-30% of you will end up in this situation of either the helper or the drunk.

I know this guide consisted of mainly words as it's hard to have pictures in a guide of this nature. Hopefully you all took something out of this and maybe one of you can save someones life.

Alcohol and Partying - How you can save someones life

Two things I saw while reading the guide, a couple run on sentences but still a very informative and though I don't drink or party hard like that it is always good information to know.

I found that the alternating vivid colors threw my train of thought and I think sticking to plain white text would really help the reader focus on tha material better. :)

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try pick a color that complements better.

Hope you can remember that information because I've known friends of friends that have died because of those misconceptions.

Downing a pint of milk before going out lines your stomach, does the job better than the cookies :)

Milk does no better a job that diluting alcohol than any other food or beverage. Milk does not line your stomach, it simply acts as a wall if you like that alcohol has to seep through to get to your stomach, just like water, cookies, any food or beverage.

Eating wheat biscuits helps sober someone up just as much as any other food would.

Lets say you drink a bottle of Vodka.
    Instead.
You drink a bottle of Vodka and eat some wheat biscuits.

That alcohol is not going to magically disappear, it will not sober you up anymore than any other food or beverage. Eating something before hand simply dilutes the alcohol so it won't instantly make you sick and drunk.

Knew most of this stuff but it was still a interesting read. I recommend adding something like eating wheat biscuits before or after alcohol because it does help quite a bit towards sobering up.

I could have done with this a few months ago... I just bent him over the toilet and waited for him to puke. It worked eventually but it wasn't a good way to spend the night. :/ Good guide, really informative and useful. You could possibly put a few more picture in (if you can find any of relevance) but otherwise it's great. 8/10 :)

You can also add that if they are on their back and unconscious that their tongue can fall backwards and cover their windpipe thus leading them to suffocate.

I know food doesn't sober you up, but if you drink on an empty stomach your in for a rough night lol

Also there was no mention of if someone is passed out an chundering (spewing) to roll them on their side, gently tapping there back an making sure their tongue is not in the way. (clearing the mouth)

Other then that not a bad guide

Yea be careful when you bend someone over the toilet, if your not supporting them the toilet is a very hard object and your teeth aren't hard enough.
I want to put more pictures in too, however it's hard to find ones that complement this. Thanks for the feed back!
I'll add this as well thanks.
Yea, thats why it's better to eat a fistful before you go out, it stops the alcohol giving you a really bad stomach ache as well as it delays it from getting you drunk as fast.
When you put someone in the recovery position, this should stop the problem, however just make sure you put them in the position facing towards you, otherwise they could vomit so much and still drown in their own puke.
    Thanks!

The best place to be when you're drunk is infront of a tv playing video games.

Not a bad guide, I had a mate not too long ago who drank a whole Tequila bottle + the "worms" from it, and well. He was more than definately poisoned, luckily I had a mate there who knew the recovery position etc, HOWEVER. We did feed him bread, though it's good to know this for future. :)

There is a lot that you can add on here, especially because this topic is so broad.

However, it is definitely a great guide with a great base that can be improved on. I learned a few things, and glad you made this guide. Solid effort.

The fact that you put him in the recovery position half nullifies the immense risk feeding him bread could cause.
Because bread is so hard to chew when your drunk, generally drunk people will try to spit it out, however their friends insist they have more, and ultimately they suffocate and die on it.
The fact that you put him in the recovery position is a very good thing indeed, most people lie their friends down on a bed or sofa.

    Thanks!

I tried to make this guide short sharp and sweet if you like. There are a plethora of myths I could have further elaborated on, however I chose the ones most commonly occurring in the teenage age group, and ones that I have actually witnessed.

I'll edit your quote in fully if you finish it xD.

But, simply put. Feeding bread DOES NOT sober somebody up. Force feeding bread (as people often do) can, and will KILL SOMEONE. Point of raising the misconception, to tell people not to feed bread to someone that is drunk, it DOES NOT DO ANYTHING and can possibly KILL THEM.
