Remove Imposter lists?

Ok hear me out. My understanding of someone posting their imposter list in their thread is so that people don't get scammed by the imposters.

But I've been thinking about this and I seriously have no idea how it helps to avoid the problem.

If you want to know someone's msn then you click the msn thing in their name or look in their thread where they have stated it.

I just cannot ever picture someone on msn talking to an imposter and then thinking "hang on I better check xxx's imposter list to see if this guy is an imposter". Wouldn't the logical thing be to simply check the thread for the person's correct msn, add the person and then you know what their email is?

As I see it the only thing an imposter list does it serve as a spam and possibly HELP imposters (A victum may see the imposter list and have the imposter email in their subconscience so when the imposter adds the victum they will think they recognize the email)

Not to mention it's mostly for the big shots to suck their own dick by making the claim "I'm so big and famous check out how many imposters I have".

Lol I'm just joking with that last part guys, don't' get offended anyone



Although I've probably fucked up and haven't realized the reason why they are important, so please point it out to me so I can be enlightened

 

Having an impostor list is very handy.

Reasons:
1) Gives out awareness
2) Teaches everyone to receive a PM
3) Etc,

 

Some people have asked me if "[email protected]" is me even while I'm talking to them on my real msn, so don't take anything for granted about whether or not people are gonna be "logical". At the very least, the imposter list is just one more way to alert people to how real the imposter problem is.

Also I think it's hard to glance at a list and subconsciously think an imposter email is a real one. I've never heard of it happening anyway

 

Why don't people just take the huge space where they list all the imposters and just use it to say

My msn is [email protected] DO NOT ACCEPT ANYHTING ELSE

 

I initially started with that, but people were still getting impostered fairly frequently, so I added the imposter list after the warning.

I got a new msn though, so most of my imposters' old fake msn's are useless, so I don't bother putting the list in my threads anymore

 

As much as I hate to have to say this and actually mean every word of it.....

The average sythe user is fucking stupid.

If more people requested PM's, double checked E-Mail Addresses, and used VMM's/OMM's during trades, scamming would be cut by like 80%. People are FAR too careless, and it ends up in them being scammed.

I personally don't have an impostor list, nor do I plan on making one. In my opinion anyone who gets scammed by an impostor deserved to be scammed. Maybe it will teach them to follow the magic rules of trading.

1) Ask for a PM or some sort of verification by posting on a thread
2) Double check E-Mail
3) Don't go first without checking vouches. Not just the NUMBER of the vouches, but the QUALITY of them as well.

 

I do think that you're right about having a giant ONLY EMAIL thing, but at the same time, it can be useful to have a list of imposters
I have 0 imposters at the moment ( I think ) so I'm happy

 

I completely agree, impostor lists are 100% useless. It's something I noticed right when I first joined, but I doubt anything would change regardless of how many people said it was useless.

Think about it this way: two members are trading, none of them are going to look through an impostor list and say, ok, I guess you're not on here, you must be legit, without actually checking their real email. What everyone actually does here in a place we like to call reality is check the person's one legit email address, and if that doesn't match up, it's an impostor.

If anything, the impostor list causes more people to be scammed. They think because one impostor isn't on the list yet, that he must be who he says he is, thus causing the member to be scammed. Having the impostors lists gives all the stupid people (yes there are a lot of them), the impression that those are the ONLY impostors out there, which isn't true at all.

So true, it's funny, but so sad.

I got around this problem by saying calling it an "Incomplete Imposter List", and saying that there were likely to be other imposters who were not on the list

 

Whatever helps Sythe users from being scammed by impostors, no matter how small an impact it may have, is worth keeping.

It doesn't really cause any issues having it so why remove it?

 

How does it help being scammed by imposters though? It might raise awareness that imposters exist, but seriously by this point in the game if you are unaware/get scammed by an imposter then you deserve it.

The issue, however small it may be, is that it's just spam and an eye sore

 

Bolded words speak for themselves, and no one who has done no wrong deserves to get scammed.

There really is no issue though; anything to help prevent a scam is worth using.

 

Ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law, that is my view on people being scammed by imposters on Sythe.

They do deserved to get scammed. It means they were not being the slightest bit intelligent and were not reading stickies or even getting a general feel for how trades are conducted on Sythe before willingly handing their own gp/items over to a stranger.

I just view it as counter productive spam, just like 20 idiots bumping a phishing thread to say "Don't click"

Let the morons get scammed, they have been given all the tools necessary to avoid it in the stickys.

Like I said earlier, all it would take is to replace 10+ lines of imposter emails with one line saying "My only email is [email protected], accept no others"
