your opinion on referees

recently i got a job on a paintball field as a referee and i never knew how much it sucks to be a ref.
no matter your call there will always be some one mad at you.

has anyone had similar experiences? what are your opinions?

 

Referees are payed for their alertness and their decisive call-making. It only seems fair then that they are allowed to be judged on this matter. Referees have it tough and for that they should be respected.

Usually the person is mad at what happened though and not actually the referee. Controversial calls that are obviously wrong are a separate problem. Like in football when there is video evidence that the referee made a poor call, that is when one can be legitimately mad at the referee because he made a mistake.

 

Man I'd never be able to be a referee for any sport especially if it's aired on T.V. and everyone knows the ref made a terrible call.

People will be mad regardless, whether it's the fans or the players from the teams. This is bound to happen and referees need to be able to tolerate this stuff and that's why they have a tough job and are respected (for the most part).

 

I'm a Paintball referee and an umpire. Remember, you're not going to value the pay you get as a ref unless you truly love the sport. If I didn't ref, I wouldn't be able to afford the $100+ practices every week, but cash wise I get very little. (I get paid in paint / admission passes.)

As for umpiring and refereeing in general, just remember one thing. Half of the people aren't going to like the call you made. Just zone everyone out and do what you do. You're there for a reason and don't let other people beat up on you. In most cases you have the power to eject / kick people out, and don't be afraid to do that if you need to. When you're paintballing, people will tend to argue, get on your case A LOT less if they know that any second you could kick them out, and they lose all of the money they spent to play that day.

 

They're people who do a very difficult job generally much better than most of the dickheads that spend their time criticising them.

 

I'm not going to lie, whenever I'm playing hockey, regardless of who is reffing the game, they usually do something to make me pissed off at them. Whether it's something they say or a stupid call they make, I just don't get along with them very well. Other players feel the same way.

There's not much a ref can do about it, because you can't be biased. If you make a call one way, one team will hate you. You make a call the other way, the other team hates you. No ref can be perfect.

Just try to make the best calls you can, and ref to the best of your ability. Regardless of how good the calls you make are, you're going to have players who think you've made the wrong choice. Just try to get past the fact that not all players are going to like you, and try to have fun.

 

Exactly I donr take sides I just dont likd it that when I catch them cheating *wiping they get mad I told one guy to grow up and that im here to make the game fair he threw a tantrum and vouch to never come back it just upsets me that people do that.

If I wasnt there to make sure they dont cheat no one would ever get shot out
