    New law in New Zealand

    http://tvnz.co.nz/politics-news/file-sharing-law-passed-4120852

I was just watching the news and there is this new law in New Zealand about file sharing. I personally do download a few TV programs every now and then but some of these statements seem a bit unfair.

I personally think that this statement is pretty unfair. Internet providers will just start randomly cutting people off and nobody could do anything about it.

That's a bit of a hefty fine. I'm not even sure that burning a DVD would get you that.

This law was only publicly talked about today, it was talked about a few months ago but they have tried to keep this in the dark.

    Thoughts anyone?

I doubt this will go through. If it does it will take them years to do so because NZ government is shit.

Edit: Parliament is preparing to pass new internet copyright rules into law tonight.
Wow, this will be really gay if they do.... Even though they won't be able to prove much. Won't they have to go through our internet downloads and history to get this info? Invasion of privacy?

Yeah, just read the whole article. I'm surprised they leaped into action so fast for such a big issue. They usually take years for other issues.

    New law in New Zealand

    Sigh...

    Seeing straight through the law.

Government revenue raising, as the law itself will not stop anything significant, as people will not stop downloading.

Also, if the Government does actually go ahead with it and rigorously enforces it not only will it make your average class citizen who cannot afford the programs initially broke, it will completely ruin the economy.

IF however the Government does not rigorously enforce it, then it's a stupid waste of Government officials times to pass a ridiculous law they won't even enforce.

I cannot see one positive come out of this that outweighs ONLY 10% of the negatives.

I would most definately be eligible too lol

So much games, music, movies and tv series that MAYBE shouldn't be there

Many laws like this get passed, with false hopes.
They'll crack down at first, making an example, then back off.
I say it'll only effect serial downloaders, people who used flagged sites etc. It'll be very hard to enfore something everybody does.

The thing I've always thought iffy about computer laws is:

They can prove that the computer downloaded something at a certain time, but they have NO way at all of proving who was at the computer.. And even if they accuse you of anything, you can just be like "Ohh, well I wasn't on the computer then." and they'll go "Well, yes you were." and you'll go "No I wasn't."

And there's nothing the law can do.

With this law, they can just suspect you of downloading illegal files and they can cut you off.

I don't think law enforcement can act like that. There always is good reason or evidence to back up.

I don't really have an opinion on this as I don't and never have illegally downloaded before, but it's good to see action being done... not sure if this was the right way to go about it, though.

Seems a bit drastic to take action even without actual proof. I am surprised they are passing this law so quickly as well. It definitely needs some fine tuning.

I think that they are doing it rushed this time so there cannot be protests like last time they tried to pass this =/.

That's bullshit. In my opinion, If I have a file, no matter what it is or how I got it, I should be able to distribute it to whoever I want.

Of course I understand protecting things people put hard work into, but don't punish the person downloading it, punish the person uploading it if anyone.

If there's a dvd just sitting on a park bench, 95% of people would take it because it's free and it's right there. Same thing goes for all the files on the internet like movies, music, and games.

In my opinion, this is a retarded law. The reason why is that everyone file shares just looking at a page. The file is transfered from the server to your computer.

Honestly knowing the government they will go ahead with the law and then pick out several people, take them down and use them as poster people to scare others in to stop downloading things. There is no way they can crack down on every one downloading things. The most they could do is see which address are downloading lots of stuff but it could be from itunes and bought perfectly legal. I wouldn't worry if I was you.

the law is retarded but the ISP won't do anything.

Why would they? they loose customers and gain nothing from it. There's no point. Other than hurting your own company.
