Laptop keeps overheating :\ [NEED HELP]

    Hey guys,
so I have a laptop, cost around $700. It is a Compaq Presario C700.
I've had it for about a year and a half now maybe 2. I've tried opening the back of the laptop to clean the fan etc, but it didn't work. I'm pretty sure that the fan is broken, but not entirely sure. It takes about 5 - 10 minutes before the laptop overheats and automatically shuts down.
Should I take this to a computer store? Or can I do something myself about it?

    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

You could replace the fan yourself. If you confirm that it is indeed broken, I can help you out via MSN.

Is It Only started overheating latley ?
I always find that laptops overheat when left on for longer periods of time or when doing stuff that demands lots of cpu or ram such as botting.

also how long do you have it on at a time ?

A little tip is not to put it on soft furnishings, such as pillows sofa etc as this will hold the heat in place, Make sure it is on a desk etc.

I don't know to much about laptops so that is all i can really suggest apart from making sure the fan is in working order, if you can't manage to fix this i would take it back to the shop and let them sort this out for you or request for them to send new parts :)

    Good luck.

Well is started overheating around 2 or 3 months ago, since then I just gave up even trying to turn it on because it overheats within 5 minutes. This also answers your question on how long do I have it on at a time. I don't because it just overheats too quickly. Before it started overheating I'm pretty sure I barely turned it off (stupid, I know), I just closed the lid.

I think the problem was the fact you purchased a computer for $700, you know it will not be the greatest of quality. A laptop cooler would be the best bet for you if you don't want to go through the hassle of replacing the fan.

Right, thanks guys. I think the best bet would be to give it to the computer shop and let the pro's do it.

Personally I'd still see if it's under warranty, if it is, and the chassy is a pain in the ass to get to, take it in.

If not, or it's easy getting to the fan, what's stopping you?

It depends on your comfort level, even if the chassy is a bitch to dissassemble but you're sure you know what your doing, shouldn't matter. If you're not certain you can do it (also compaq should have instructions at the very least on their site.) Get'r done. Your fan should cost between 10-20$ w/ shipping. At least that's what I've paid for mine.

Also did you remove all the dust from inside your machine?

2ndly, depending on where your intake/exhaust ports are you may also want to invest in an auxillary laptop fan, they're usually pretty cheap. But help a load with overheating.

Alright, thanks for your help. And I'm pretty sure I removed the dust, is there a special way to get into the fan apart from just taking the back off?

Shouln't be hard, I mean I once had to replace an internal power supply on a Toshiba Sattelite A25-S207, that was a bleeding cunt..

you should have a cover, that keeps the fan in, although that isn't always true, aside from that, a couple screws and disconnect it's power supply, real easy stuff.

Well I don't have much experience with that sort of stuff. I suppose I will just take it to the computer pro's, cause I really cbf. I also have a tech-spert mate, which will cut a deal.

You can try using those heat mats.

Also position a fan near your 'exhaust' side of the laptop aka where the hot air shoots out from.

Laptop keeps overheating :\ [NEED HELP]

try putting it on wood/glass surfaces, instead of carpets/beds etc.. if it still overheats.. buy a usb computer fan.. u put it under your laptop.. i bought mine for $20 (i had the exact same problem).. been using it for a year now hasnt shut off due to overheating once... its not worth paying the extra money to get the internal fan fixed unless the laptop fan for $20 doesnt work.
    hope i helped!

Try taking a vacuum to it, that helped my computers issues. Most likely a lot of dust, or something is close to melting.

Yea, the laptop shutting off is a safety mechanism, it's first safety mechanism is the cpu clocking down to allow it more chance to cool down. Some bios(s) will give you the option of adjusting what temp it clocks down at, you should adjust this temperature DOWN if you adjust it at all, never adjust it up, you may also get a setting that well let you adjust what temp the machine stops clocking down, you could adjust this if you wish, but do be careful as it is after all a safety feature.

Internal fan:: You should still get that taken care of, definitly.
Auxiliary fan:: A worthwhile investment, wallmart will take care of you. :D

I've fixed many laptop fans, it all boils down to weather or not the manufacturer was in a good or bad mood while designing the chassy. Sometimes it's retardedly simple, other times.. you get these neat modles with a very intricate internal self-locking clips in which case you better take a deep breath.

Okay, thanks alot for your help. I think I might just take it to my mate who is very very good at computers and owns a computer shop, and he will be able to fix it for cheap :) Thats the best option I think as all this sounds too technical.

...And no I'm not fucking retarded :p
