Personal support idea.

Hello, I've been reading through the 'Personal Support' part of the forum and had an idea. Maybe a group of 'decent' people who are always happy to help people with problems. So I thought, maybe if there were enough people willing to do this, maybe have a stickied thread giving information on these people who are willing to help others.

Along with this thread there could be a list of people you could pm and maybe ask if you could speak to them using a phone when ever they are in need of a chat with someone understanding and not just going to be an idiot to them.

Maybe even be willing to give the person seeking help their mobile phone numbers so they can talk, because I know when a problem is shared, a problem is halved, but sometimes you cant be on msn or here sending pm's to each other to talk.

However these people would have to be seriously willing to help, and possibly create a new rank for them such as "Helpful Person" or something along those lines to show they are here to help, I understand that people will bring up the idea of "Having a life outside of the internet" but this would be only for the most devoted people to help.

I'm not looking to be flamed at for bringing this idea up, so if you don't agree with this idea then please could you just keep it calm and list why you think this may not work.

I would also volunteer to do this in the uk, maybe we could get a list of who is interested to do this in their countries before making a sure list.

There has been some confusion with what I mean by this. All that i am proposing is to be a friend with someone to speak to them and get them to talk up with what problems they could have, like a pen-pal as if you would think of it that way. I am aware that a specialist is where you should go if you need to get help with a problem and I completely agree with this idea, i proposed this idea just to start the idea of having a few people in sythe who are willing to be friends with lonely people who are looking for a kind friend to get them on the right route to becoming happy again.

 

I really like the thought of this, and would volunteer. Support.

 

I've experienced quite a bit in my life, and I have no issue with helping anyone not fuck up the same way I did , or my friends have. I'd help I like the idea too.

 

i wouldn't want to give my phone number to some strangers. the PA forums is working very well and is moderated very immensely so there's no chance of trolls. no support.

 

No support. We aren't trained professionals, not to mention there are plenty of free helplines. Although I think a PSA mod could be appointed.

 

This is a good idea. Cba quoting your post, but goku who said anything about a phone number. Idk if the OP has something about that or not, but even so, there should be something like this. There is enough good people that are willing to do this. I fully support this.

 

I support both this proposition, as well as what JohnK said. I'd say either what the OP said, or a Personal Support Moderator.

As for myself, I'm a normal person and have experienced a bit. I'd love to help others out with their problems. I offer it over MSN, but would be more than willing to talk on the phone if the other person wants to as well.

It's always nice to get an unbiased opinion - asking your in real life friends is very biased.

I have mixed feelings on the idea as these aren't trained professionals though it does help to have someone in your relative age group with some kind of similar interest or common ground to talk to (either here via PMs/IM etc.) versus someone on one of those support lines albeit many of them use volunteers with minimal guidance.

I don't support having a usertitle or rank for this though as it'll be exploited as other so called helpful ranks (User Education).

 

I agree with what you guys are saying.. but i didn't mean for us to be a doctor like person, maybe just someone to talk to... be friends with? If you've got someone to count on to speak to then i guess your going to be feeling better already, then could go and see a specialist to help with your problems.

But I'm up for it (The sticky) or maybe if a Personal Support Mod was appointed then that would help greatly.

 

I agree, for the most part we are young runescape players. I've considered offering my opinion on topics in that section in the past but then I realize I'm only 20. A lot of the posts that happen in there offering help are really not helping the OP

 

i am entering my third year of university
my major is in psychology.

I used to give help to many people in the PSA until heyd3nrox got me banned from there because she said i attacked her.

giddy banned me. the reason given was: grow up

search for any of my posts made in the PSA section and judge for yourself whether or not I have been helpful.

Oh well, just my rant.

A mod could be appointed, but this idea seems like it's not a "helpline" more of a talk to area, or vent and get support from someone who might have been in that same situation

 

yeah, i saw this idea as more of just a friend-line rather than help-line. Just for friends rather than a solution to their problems.
