    Fukushima I Nuclear Disaster

For those of you who don't know what's going on:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukushima_I_nuclear_accidents
For those of you who want to know the technical details and potential risk from a reliable unbiased source: http://www.ucsusa.org/nuclear_power/nuclear_power_risk/safety/nuclear-reactor-crisis-faq.html

As I hope most of you know, Japan has just had a massive earthquake and tsunami. Over 10,000 people were killed, and many towns ruined. Sadly enough, this gigantic tragedy may be dwarfed by an even larger one. Three of Japan's nuclear power plants, each with multiple reactors, were damaged by the earthquake and tsunamis. The plant with the most issues is Fukushima I; the water system has broken down there and the nuclear rods are melting from overheating, as happened at the terrible tragedy in Chernobyl. A 20km radius has been evacuated, and a 30km radius has been marked as indoors only. Currently, brave Japanese soldiers, firemen, and scientists are exposing their bodies to deadly amounts of radiation so the whole Japanese Island is not affected. The United States is sending much of the 7th Fleet to Japan, in case the tens of thousands of US Navy personnel, or far worse the entire population, need to be evacuated.

Please discuss what you think will happen here, consider what this means for US reactions and reactors around the world (currently 2 US reactors of the same specifications of the Japanese reactor are on the San Andreas Fault Line), and leave your condolences. I must laud the Japanese for their expert handling of the situation and I hope they can keep it under control.

I had to press "add to dictionary" for Fukushima, but not Chernobyl; let's hope this is still the case in 10 years.

I hope radiation doesn't reach or cause anything significant to the west coast of the U.S. That's when everyone will start freaking out.

Chernobyl is the result of building a reactor on a budget, cutting corners and implementing little to none safety precautions. The media are making this sound out worse than it is, or were.

The recent events in Japan are quite sad and upsetting, but I wish them a fast recovery.

I hope that we can help our allies as much as possible. On top of that I wish the best for the recovery of Japan.

Hopefully radiation won't cause too many problems. I wish Japan the best in these upsetting times.

    Fukushima I Nuclear Disaster

The Fukushima nuclear powerplant I was built in 1971; that is 3 years after the 8.2 earthquake that happened in Misawa.

Whoever thought of building a nuclear powerplant on a earthquake hot spot 3 years after a severe one is a fucking genius

Now, they may not be the only ones getting affected by the radiation.

Just going to bump the thread and important issue with a response to the above quote.

I agree that mainstream media can be skewed and biased, and that it is good to look at all points of view and alternative media. However, asserting businessweek is automatically "very biased and government influenced" is taking it a bit too far.

I'm sorry, but in my own opinion, I think that this reactor will "blow." I'm not trying to scare anyone. This IS a disaster.

Really fucking sucks. Our whole world is terribly unprepared for such disasters. Hopefully the future will bring innovations that will keep such tragedies from occurring.

    reactors can't "blow".
However, enough nuclear waste can be released to destroy/contaminate most of the world's agriculture, water, and population.

    Fukushima I Nuclear Disaster

WOW, this thread died? I am not sure if grave-digging is appropriate in this matter but I believe it is. Fukushima and Reactor 4 could possibly be the cause if killing atLEAST 2,000,000,000 (2 billion) or more people.....Is this true? This is the only thread I can find on this topic.
    god bless

uhh this is not an important gravedig because the reactor was declared stable nearly half a year ago. The fact of the matter is that runaway energy sources like uranium and hydrogen fusion are dangerous and unfortunately things like this will happen as long as these power stations are terrestrial.
