Wasted A year or two of my life

So im from The UK and left school at 16 with Not the best grades, got C's And D's ( Was predicted straight B's - but i took school as a joke )

So i left school and went to college to do plumbing - cut the corse short a year as i wasnt enjoying it

applied for IT programing and i was put in the wrong class and it came to like a month in and the course was way to easy for me and i couldnt get in on the class i was ment to be in.

And now its nearly a year later ( 18 in a week ) with no major intrest in anything and i dont know what career move to make.

My Mum thinks i should go into the army ( If i want ) because she thinks with my situation i will get the most out of life such as travel to different countrys and having lots of different experience.

Just wondering if anybody here is going through the same or has been through similiar situations ?

I'm going through the same thing besides the age difference (I'm 17), I'm also thinking about the military as my sister has been in it for about 7 years. You're lucky your mom supports you, my mom would probably cry like she did when my sister first told her she was enlisting.

I like the reasons your mom suggested, traveling to different countries seems reallyfun, you can also get a career from the military or go back to school while you're in the military. You get really good experience and life skills out of it. You get a decent pay, and whatnot.

This is mainly based on the U.S army, I'm assuming the UK has the same benefits/perks if not even better ones.

Have you ever thought about a job at Jagex? I mean you'd need to go back to school/college, but that seems like an amazing job ;)

If you decide to enlist in the military please update us, I'm interested as that may be a route I'll take. Tell us what happens, cheers.

Look, do N O T go to the army, I have literally fucked up my life up until this year, find something you like, such as science, or anything of the sort, look up careers about it, and just stick with it, it won't seem hard once you get a routine ;)

I see alot of 'young' guys heading towards the army, and the older ones complaining about how it ruined their life. I personally went the academic route so wouldn't know first hand ; but as Pkkid V6 said: avoid it.

People think the army is cool, with guns etc.
Personally, me cousin was in the army. It ruined his life.

People who return have trauma's mate, don't go in the army like Pkkid V6 said.

Just do some tests on the internet, lot's of career tests out there to find out what is good for you.

Just keep applying for the courses you want, 18 is still very young and you have lots of opportunities still.

It's not the end of the world, it's just a tricky situation. I would say find a course and stick to it though, tuition fees for universities are sky-rocketing in the UK and you might not be able to pay the £9000 tuition fee.

I wouldn't suggest jumping into something head first like the army. You shouldn't see it as a last resort, you've got plenty of opportunities to educate yourself. I personally don't enjoy the course I'm doing but I'm into my second year and don't have to pay for it, so I'm sticking by it and I'll get decent qualifications after completing it. I'm also looking for a job on the side, to help pay for expenses.

Figure out what u like and then go for it. Internet is an economy of its own. It is relatively easy to make money at the internet if you want. Just fallow your heart and think about alternatives only when there really is no way to learn and work with something you really want. I belive there's always a way. I m 18 myself and my grades are pretty much the same as yours. I only have so bad grades cause i dont belive in education system and am not very keen in learning things i really dont need. What do you remember about what u learned a month ago ?? Probably very little. So think about what do you remember of it after a years time. Grades show nothing. Maybe just your attidue but not that you are stupid and cant aim for your dreams. If you find something you are interested then i will be no problem for you to learn it.

So short version: Learn something you like and are interested of and the problem will just solve on its own. If you are really interested in what u are learning then you probably will keep learning it after lessons on your own and wont even notice how you soon make money with it.

Chill out for a month and not worry about anything, make a folder with possible life plans. Military shouldn't be a back up plan, it should be a plan A.

Although you can't really plan life.

I think that there's always a time in life where everyone feels like they've wasted their time doing something unproductive or something they completely didn't enjoy--but we all go through these things in order to learn and experience from it. In school, what courses did you actually enjoy? And did you actually get your basics done yet?

I kind of had the same experience with the schooling and not sure what I wanted to major in. But I originally went to school for engineering getting my basics over with a community college, then I ended up getting an IT job halfway through my degree, so I didn't have much time to commit my full attention to school. I ended trying out http://www.engineeringdegree.net/ to take some courses online around my full time job, but I wasn't too fond of it with learning through a computer and kind of learning on my own--I did this for about 2 years, it just took me what felt like forever to finish my degree. So, I felt like working and doing online schooling was starting to be a waste of time. I finally took a break from my job, and enrolled as a full time student at http://www.washington.edu/ and finished my senior year there. It was better for me learning with peers in a campus setting than online and was able to fully commit to school, so that was nice.

So after much effort and time...I was finally able to obtain my engineering degree after a good 5-6 years! Sounds like forever, I know....but you are still young, so you've got a few years ahead of you to still figure out what your passion and interests are. Good luck!

Joining the Army is not something your Mum tells you to do, it is a mature decision that can only be made by yourself, it takes a certain amount of mental toughness to serve and fight and possibly kill, not everyone can handle it. You need to ask yourself what you enjoy doing, look for a job/career that you will end the day with a smile on your face. Your still young and will be working for another 40 years so don't worry toooo much hehe :)

I can't say I *personally* am having the same issues, but I can say I have MANY friends in your situation.

To be honest, I think (as well as they came to the conclusion of) that if you aren't sure what you would like to do with your life, a good thing to do is enter the army (or some division of it, whether it be navy, marines, etc). It is a great thing to do while thinking of what you really want to do in the long term, because you don't want to waste too much time figuring it out without having anything accomplished.

I have at least 15 friends entering the army as they are in the same position as you and each one are planning on doing schooling during it and figuring out what they ultimately want to do when they get out.

    That's your best bet.

    Good luck,

    Sir Huntman

i went through something similar when i was younger, only my mom was much less supportive, she forced me to go to college when i had no clue what major i wanted, i changed it 3 times in a year and dropped out after the 1st semester. when i was 19 i pursued culinary, im 23 now (today is my bday actually lol) and im changing my career in a few weeks to something else because culinary isnt working out. i guess what im trying to get across is it may take a while to figure out what u wana do and even when u think u find it u may change a few years down the road. i didnt go to the military personally but if u have few strings attached at home (gf, etc) id go. its good experience, will help u grow up and become a better person, good money, and it will bide u time to figure out what u wana do
