Most protein powders are pretty similar, it really just depends on the fillers used in the product. I would suggest fixing your diet with the money you were going to spend on supplements

I have a good diet, as my brother is working out alot i tend to eat the same as him which is allways usually fish or chicken with vegetables most days, maybe pasta on others... so i was interested in getting protein shake just to boost me that little bit extra.

Not To Hard To Fix the diet though, lots of chicken and turkey, dont stack up to high on carbs, little bit of natural peanut butter for your healthy fats.

if your maintainance calories per day is 2500, if your losing weight then dont go lower than 2000 or putting on weight no higher than 3000.

your margin is 500 lower or higher, dont go beyond that, make sure your getting at least 8 hours sleep, you dont build muscle in the gym, you build it when you rest.

get plenty of water, water is like oil to an engine except its for our bodys.
make sure your getting enough protein, about a gram per pound of muscle mass ( Not 100%)

If you've just started the focus on perfecting your diet and routine and once you start plateau-ing then start looking into supplements like protein. Otherwise that protein will just be wasted money and fat on your body.

Yea, I also go to the gym alot, i was 9stone a year ago now i'm 12 stone 5. I began taking creatine which i quickly learned was good if used correctly. I would reccomend USN Strawberry protein good value and it also tastes great! Fast release is probably the better of the two.

Well not really, alot of proteins on the market are very low in fat. Just have a good diet don't starve yourself eat healthy and take your protein twice daily. :) Train hard and eat wise, also another tip don't train just for gains, train because you enjoy it and you'll soon see gains.

I'm a bodybuilder so maybe I can give you some tips.

By far the cheapest whey protein is
"Optimum Nutrition : GOLD STANDARD : Whey Protein."

I'm not sure about UK but I'm pretty sure they sell it, If not, get it online.

If you need help with anything, Routines, Lifting techniques ( Supersets, dropsets etcs ), feel free to ask.

Eating fish and chicken are very good meals for building up.
Eat what you require, The bigger you are, the more food you need to consume.

Just to give you an idea,

I eat 5-6 meals a day, Supersets and dropsets, Train heavy all month and periodically cycle with light weights. A daily routine I change every 8 months to prevent reaching a plateau. Check for proportion and work on that muscle part to make your whole body symmetric.

I use Rainbow protein its expensive but natural with only about 3 ingredients and none of that bullshit artificial stuff etc. Spend about $300 a month on this stuff.
Also you can try Alive! products probably one of my favourites out there dont know if you have Whole Foods or Sprouts in the UK but those 2 places sell everything you need.

Bodybuilding is about caloric intake, and macronutrient intake, as long as it surpasses, or equals WHAT you NEED to get what you need DONE, (i.e, if you wish to cut, 500 under maintainence, wish to bulk? 500 over maintainence.) Meaning if you're 160 pounds, looking to put on muscle, size, weight, then bulk, meaning you'd eat approximatley 3200-3300 calories per day, 180-240g protein, 300-400g carbs (Low GI complex carbs, except post workout, then obtain simple carbs, to spare as much muscle as possible, gets stored as glucose fast, then fueled, etc.) and around 60-70g fats (More clean fats, omega-3) Just make sure the carbs, and fats are eaten at the times they are needed to (carbs being complex (Like I mentioned earlier), or if they get stored as glucose, and don't get fuled they form with 3 fatty-acid to create bodyfat)

As far as buying a protein shake, it should only be consumed once a day (post workout) and is perfectly fine first thing in the morning if you please (Because your body was in a catabolic state all night, so meal 1 needs to be a very large meal) But I recommend if you're bulking, and take one in the mornning, make a homeade gainer out of it, because it can be quite difficult achieveing over 3300 calories in pure good foods. So possibly 2 scoop whey (or whatever equals 40-50g in a serving) 1 cup orange juice (more of a simple carb, but like I said, you've been catabolic, you need it) 1 cup fat free milk (1-2% will do, don't worry too much about sat. fats, if the amount is moderate 10-12g per day, it wont' do much if any damage, and it increases testosterone levels a little) 1/2 cup of corn starch, 2 tablespoons canola oil, and BLEND. Should be around 1000-1100 calories, but don't have that alone, have oatmeal with it ;)

Now as for post workout shake, don't make a gainer from it, it's fine how it is in the container! Get 40-50g of protein out of it, and eat around 50-60g simple carbs post workout (Bananas, sugar, etc.) Then eat another meal 1 hour after the consumption of that postworkout meal.

As far as which whey you should buy....It needs to be clean, it doesn't have to be a big brand like half the idiots in the world will tell you. Such as Musclemilk, which is highly overated, and NOT clean. Syntha-6 is fine....If you want to pay 30-50 dollars, or even more depending on where you live, every 2 weeks. Or you could go with the easiest choice, walmart whey. Which is ironicly more clean then musclemilk, contains more protein, less simple carbs (I know I said simple carbs post workout, but I perfer getting them from whole foods, and table sugar.) and A LOT less fats (MM's fats aren't good fats either) and did I mention it's like 30$ less then MM, and around 20$ less then Syntha-6? It's only 15-20$... You have plenty of more choices too... But if you can afford Syntha-6 constantly, then I say go for it, it isn't a bad choice.

You don't need protein shakes unless you're lacking in it. You want to take in about 1g per lean lb. So if you're 160lb, 20% body fat try to get around 138g of protein, and so on. If you find yourself not enjoying whey you can just eat chicken breast often.

Besides protein shakes, you should be consuming fish oil. If you get around 20-30g of omega-3 (in fish oil) you have yourself the best natural supplement you can ever find, ever. Not only will it enhance your fat burning and gains, it'll make you feel great overall. Your mood will be noticeably better.

edit: Fish oil should be taken via liquid if you want to consume adequate amounts. You'll need to take like 15 tablets to get what a couple spoonfuls could give you.

Don't take protein if your not going to work out also it will make you gain weight. If your going to work out take creatine+Protein and one last thing don't take protein if your trying to lose weight. Gold Standard 100% weigh is good the chocolate flavor actually tastes like chocolate.

Lol, protein is absouletly fine when cutting. It's a faster acting protein filled with essential AA's to get into your system. It is essential to have post workout, cutting, OR bulking. You're only harming your gains, and protein is definatley more essential to have while in a catabolic state (when cutting, not to mention one of the MOST catabolic states, which is after a workout) to help spare as much muscle as possible (also carbs come into place to spare the limited protein eaten during catabolism, but that is also another story) You need that to rebuild torn muscle fibers, a lot of it too. Also, useing carbs (glucose) to spare the protein that you consumed throughout the day, which is in danger of being spared for fuel. Also, protein is fine on days you take off from the gym, I'd recommend it in the morning.

If you want natural protein-building sources, then try "raw egg" or fish/chicken.

Also, make sure you are doing the best excercising for bodybuilding, some types of excercising are just to help you lose fat/help cardio and others help build massive muscles.
