    Why do people care?

Then it's not a belief? A belief means you assume a premise to be true.
All prejudice have facts to support them, but the prejudice is not the actual science itself, it's the person's own belief and opinion.

You can have faith in something, but not of something.

Science support propaganda, but it's not the science itself.

That's like someone saying, "guns are bad cause they kill people." People kill people. The advancement of science had nothing to do with the government who decided to use it to their advantage.

I truly hope this isn't an attempt to justify religious beliefs by arguing against the foundation of all knowledge.

So in actuality there is no reality? Is that what you're trying to say?

    Why do people care?

    get your definitions correct

    belief
: a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing
    2
: something believed; especially : a tenet or body of tenets held by a group
    3
: conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon especially when based on examination of evidence

a you can have a belief in science, regardless of the truth value of that science

i dont even know how to respond to this:
"All prejudice have facts to support them, but the prejudice is not the actual science itself, it's the person's own belief and opinion."

you can have prejudice rooted in actual science. again, a belief and opinion can be true.

"You can have faith in something, but not of something."
    why not?
i find it funny how you use the same "axiom" fallacy

also, you learn in very basic philosophy that we can never know the true nature of reality because of our limited senses and our biased perspective.

"That's like someone saying, "guns are bad cause they kill people." People kill people. The advancement of science had nothing to do with the government who decided to use it to their advantage."
it is ok to hold this belief. just dont try to hold this belief while simultaneously telling me that science is "the center of forward progress"

he is not saying there is no reality. he is saying that we can never know reality as it actually exists.

you have probably been to the eye doctor.
you must know that just because you can not see something doesnt mean it is not there.

geeze. I am not going to respond to any of your arguments about beliefs opposition to science.

    Why do people care?

What you're not understanding is the difference between Knowing and believing.

    i
An opinion is the result of emotion or the interpretation of facts. Science is just the facts, no interpretation.

having faith in something is the result of an emotion, having faith of something means you hold the existence of something to be true.

I find it funny how your whole argument is based around a fallacy, argument from ignorance.

of our limited senses and our biased perspective.[/QUOTE]

You must honestly be brain dead if you don't think science is the center of progress. we'd still be living for the sole fact of survival if it weren't for science, fire would've never been controlled, and we'd be living like apes.

    you're point is....?

    Good.

    knowing:
    obsolete : cognizance
    2
a (1) : the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience or association (2) : acquaintance with or understanding of a science, art, or technique b (1) : the fact or condition of being aware of something (2) : the range of one's information or understanding <answered to the best of my knowledge> c : the circumstance or condition of apprehending truth or fact through reasoning : cognition d : the fact or condition of having information or of being learned <a person of unusual knowledge>
    3
    archaic : sexual intercourse
    4
a : the sum of what is known : the body of truth, information, and principles acquired by humankind b archaic : a branch of learning

    belief:
: a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing
    2
: something believed; especially : a tenet or body of tenets held by a group
    3
: conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon especially when based on examination of evidence

belief: a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing
knowledge: the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience or association
the only difference is the ultimate truth value of the thing held to be true.
because we can never be 100% sure we see reality as it is, we can never be sure which is a false belief, or incorrect knowledge, and which is is truthful knowledge, or a correct belief.

if you dont think that your senses are fallible, I would recommend you read Plato's cave scenario. It provides a very simple and easy to digest explanation of the personal and social perception of truth.

science does create progress. the part I was arguing against is your assertion that this progress moves us forward.

    Why do people care?

I don't understand why also. Recently in the last week, I have seen many threads created asking how and why god is real, etc...

    Why do people care?

There is one true reality. We can never know that reality. We could be living in the matrix. You never know.

    Why do people care?

Because some people don't realise that attacking people for spreading beliefs is infact just spreading their own belief. Contradiction at it's finest.

    Why do people care?

People care because they don't know who's right about religion or not. They say that religion is false because they want to believe something is out there, but they've been let down in their life so many times that they don't know what to believe. There are exceptions to every rule and there are exceptions to this statement. I'm not trying to call out anyone who doesn't believe in a deity, I'm just saying why I think people care so much

    Why do people care?

I think people believe that they should preach their beliefs because they are right. If you think about it differently, if you know somebody is wrong about something, and that you have the right answer should you not feel obliged to point them in the right direction?

    Why do people care?

Because their beliefs are empty so they try to pick out the flaws in other peoples beliefs to make their own look better.

    Why do people care?

Science is based upon things WE created. Numbers and formulas WE made up because it works.

science is MADE UP, religion is MADE UP.
