Supreme Court: Anti-gay funeral picketers allowed

My thoughts:

• Justice Samuel Alito, the lone dissenter: "Our profound national commitment to free and open debate is not a license for the vicious verbal assault that occurred in this case."

• The Justices that ruled in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church even commented that the methods they used were uncalled for.

• A $100,000 lawsuit against someone that they protested at his son's funeral? "He said it was possible he would have to pay the Phelpses around $100,000, which they are seeking in legal fees, since he lost the lawsuit. The money would, in effect, finance more of the same activity he fought against, Snyder said."

• "Forty-eight states, 42 U.S. senators and veterans groups had sided with Snyder, asking the court to shield funerals from the Phelps family's "psychological terrorism.""

• We all know these people would be the first to beg for protection if the United States ever got into a war which threatened their ability to harass everyone.

All I can say is that I am glad that Veterans and people that have some common sense are stepping up to attempt to prevent this garbage. What good are civil rights if people intentionally use them to harm someone else? How do you classify someone as insane? After all, they do insist that God created the internet for them to spread their message and all the crap (this site, I would assume in their eyes) on the internet is to test their faith.

I wouldn't often want to wish harm upon someone, but these people have gone to a whole different level..

I see no problem here unless the protesters were harassing people..

 

We can only hope. They are one of the more disgusting things you see when you look at the human race. Why would you intentionally want to hurt other like the funeral picketing does ? Something needs to be done about them, what that is has yet to be decided.

 

Picketing someone's funeral is harassing them. They should let them grieve in peace. What if a family member of your died and someone protested at their funeral ? Telling you they are in hell right now because of their particular ideological beliefs. It's bullshit dude.

 

If they were walking around the funeral handing out flyers and being disruptive, that's one thing. But if the funeral is on public property, then they have every right to stand there and say whatever they want, just as the family has every right to use the area for their funeral. If the funeral is at a church, and the picketers are standing on the sidewalk out front, which is how I assume it played out, then there's no problem..

Bottom line is people get offended too easily. Just shut the hell up and let everyone do as they want. It'll be a lot more peaceful.


and to answer your question, I would say that's cool and walk away. I'm not so much of a child to think that if I don't like something that it should change for me. What happened to people's freedoms?

Of course they were going to rule in favor of the crazy people. The first amendment protects them.

 

I live in Kansas. I swear. One of these fucking days, I'm going to burn down their fucking house. They call themselves Christians? Fucking pricks. That's the opposite of the religion they're trying to force upon everybody. I'm in fact Christian, but you're supposed to follow what God says, and not your own opinion. In the Bible, which I've read many times, it doesn't say ONCE that "God hates fags." God hates sin, and loves his children. And, these people protesting a homosexual's funeral should be fucking shot. God forgives everybody. If you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you will be forgiven. And, there is only ONE sin that won't be forgiven. That's denying and blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

They're causing more sin by protesting. So in fact, they're just as bad as the person being discriminated against. These people are writing their own religion. Somebody should do us the favor by murdering their whole family. And then we can protest their funeral until they get a fucking taste of their own medicine.

 

I don't understand why the Phelps haven't been killed. Seriously. There are a number of radical groups and individuals that end up shooting civilians. I'm surprised the Phelps haven't been targeted.
