How to minimize the phishing problem as of late.

So, you're probably expecting to read another, "MAKE A 500 POST REQUIREMENT TO POST LINKS", or, "DON'T ALLOW OUTSIDE LINKS", etc. Well, I'm sorry to burst your oddly shaped bubble, but it isn't that.

My suggestion is to simply make it so new members cannot use the tag. This won't stop anyone from ...tp://www.rsphisher.com/]http://www.yahoo.com/

Example of what it would look like after the update:

    Feedback, comments, support?

I don't like this Idea. The Url tag could be used for a plethora of reasons. For example:

I have a smoking problem, anyone know some good articles and help online?

Poster1: Yes, click HERE and HERE to access it.
    Poster2: Yes, http://www.quitingsmoking101.com/theindex and http://www.abovetheinfluence.com/youknowwhatsright

Also, I think that the url tag makes the links look more professional in things like OMM applications and User Educator applications.

If you look at your signature, you also use the URL tag in it as well, it wouldn't look as good with just the link.

There are tons of more reasons, I really don't think this is a good idea.

He said it would only be for newcomers NOT people who have been around for years and want to become a OMM.

They would just have to bear with it for a week or two; most scammers would probably be put off by the extra time required to scam.

Please actually read the entire post. This would only apply to NEW members with a certain post count. Once that post count had been reached, the tag would once again be available ...xtra time required to scam.[/QUOTE] Exactly.

Care to elaborate on any concerns or worries? It would help me make this suggestion better.

The reason why I think this is a perfect fix is it would stop people from just registering and spamming phishing links, while at the same time, it wouldn't affect any of the new members in a negative way who wanted to post valid links.

This idea is actually not that bad. I mean there are still ways of getting around that seeing as they can just make it a **** or a .biz, but it's still a good idea.

    I support it.

Support, this limit would be for the members with less than 20/50 or 100 posts.

This is a very good idea, I'm sick of all these phishers that make accounts and spam the forum in minutes easily. 100% support.

Your suggestion was to make it so new members couldn't post links, period, however, my suggestion is just make it so they can't mask links. I think we're for the same thing here, my way is just less intrusive to new members, while still being effective.

You have to be quite silly to fall for a phishing site, and if you don't realize right away then well,

    idk.

This isn't so much about people actually falling for them, it's the amount of spam that would be stopped if people knew they had no chance of anyone falling for it since the actual URL would show up, and they couldn't mask it. /run-on sentence

How to minimize the phishing problem as of late.

i would support but the method of saying hey post count needed is just gonna spam up other sections of site with crap messages that mean nothing. i, just the other day, saw a guy who was a forum addict and his joined date was 2/19/11 so in a matter of lets say 10 days he went up 500 post? i agree something must be done but adding a post count requirement isn't the way to do it.

Well, first, I agree that post count doesn't have to be used. Days of being a member, etc., could also work. However, no one is going to waste time spamming, just so they can post a phishing link, so this suggestion would still work perfectly fine. I'm not trying to solve spamming in general, I'm simply trying to stop the spamming of phishing links, which this would do, without affecting anyone negatively.

I support this, although I don't think it's really necessary. Do people actually still click on phishing links?

Once again, I shall say, it isn't so much people are falling for them, it's the fact they're constantly spammed across the forum. If this suggestion was turned into a reality, they wouldn't even waste the time spamming it in the first place, because everyone would see the actual URL, versus the fake one they put in the tags.
