How not to get hacked [Get it right]

First off let me explain a Java applet (AKA) Java drive by. This is a common thing posted around the forum which if you click the link and a Java box comes up asking you to 'run' you'll be infected with a Remote administration tool (AKA) RAT.
A RAT is something that if infected by, the 'hacker' will have control of your computer. He will be able to do the following things :-

- View your webcam
- Listen to microphone
- Watch your key strokes (Keylogger)
- Watch your screen
- Go through your files which he can view/download or delete them
- Gain your IP address
- Open websites on your computer
- Download other malicious viruses on your computer (Hidden)

Here is a screenshot of when you open one of these websites. If you click run then you will be infected, be sure not to.



Rats/keyloggers can also be sent via download. Be sure not to download anything off anyone even if your virus detector doesn't pick it up (People can encrpyt there viruses so it will be FUD and can't be picked up by a virus detector). Remember if its too good to be true then it probably isn't.

This moves us on to another method which is more commonly used, i'm sure you have all heard of it, 'phishing'. If someone sends you a link telling you to join there clan & post on the runescape forum to apply or apply for moderator on runescape DONT. Ask for the quickfind code on the runescape forum.

Now teamviewer..

I have noticed allot of people are paranoid over teamviewer on this forum. Theres no need to panic if you know how it works. It's always best not to use teamviewer for trades because the guy is most likely going to try to scam so it is a waste of time. If you do want to use it but want to know more about it, try it out with a friend a few times. Theres a pop up when someone connects to you at the bottom right of your screen. Always make sure that you disable them from clicking on your screen just by clicking where the green arrow points here..



Then there is silent java drive bys. Pretty rare to get hold one of them & they wont last for long. This basically is the same as a java drive by exept the difference is that the java box doesn't come up, as soon as you go on the website you're infected.

So basically this concludes do not accept links of randoms or people you may even know thats acting a bit weird.
Reply make sure you let me know if this has made you a bit more relaxed with people trying to hack you, now you know what they can do and what things to avoid.

Ive noticed a number of people who have changed their RuneScape names, and are under the impression that it's a risk to their account security to give out their original RuneScape names.

Let me just say this: That's absolutely bogus.

 

There are scripts that allow users to control your mouse no matter what settings you use.

No it's not. It's the first piece of knowledge someone needs to be able to recover your account. Though it usually common for someone to recover an account that you are active on.

 

It seems like common knowledge to me but it can be very informative to people who dont already know all this. Nice post.

for years. Sure, someone can't hack you if they don't know your
username, but that's why we have passwords. The password is the
private identifyer, the username is the public one.

They can still infect you even if you disable that. They do not need to have control of your mouse to be able to infect you.

Java always asks to run the applet or not, this cant and won't actually happen. I wouldn't be suprised if you made that thing up. Java always requires a check before running a applet.
