I didn't know they could start with underscores, or spaces; is this odd, or am I just crazy?

Makes me think that, at the time whenever people were able to do that, one could have had the name "_______" or something like that.

 

I've seen someone with a dash at the start of their name before too.

Just change your name and put a _ on front..

 

Yes, it appears that you can use a variety of symbols when changing your name. I've found - and _ to work both in front and behind a name, but they are not unique so you can't rename yourself as _pker_ and expect it to work if someone else has the name without the symbols.
The system reads the names as if the _ and - are not there.

 

Yeah I have a name with a - at the beginning, apparently Jagex changed it but people just don't notice.

 

That's a pretty nice name, but like what was said above, "shizoooo" is kinda lame. I have an account with 3 spaces in a row in the name, he also has 9hp!
