Discriminate Against Smokers?

The discrimination is definitely there and its clear that is not socially acceptable to smoke in public. Being overweight has higher health risks so when will it be socially unacceptable to be overweight in public?

 

in the UK, it is now illegal to smoke in a public place, Taxi Cab drivers are not even allowed to smoke in their own cars.

I understand the point that you shouldnt be allowed to smoke whilst working, but not employing a Smoker is ridiculous.

 

Back then the governments hid that facts about smoking and it's effects on the human body.
Now with the effects pubicly known it's a good to see companies turning away job applicants who smoke.
It's sending the message for a cleaner world and a better life.

 

As was mentioned earlier in the thread, if a private business owner does not wish to hire smokers, that is their right. It is also the owner's right to not allow their customers to smoke. I do think it is wrong for the government to coerce the population with anti-smoking measures, such as banning smoking in restaurants or the "Sin Tax." That's just me and my Libertarian views though.

 

People over-eating and clogging up their arteries with fatty foods aren't denied job application spaces.

Eating mcdonaulds, KFC wouldn't either.

For people saying its nasty, dont be a hypocrite.

Open your eyes, Smoking whether it would be tobacco, marijuana or any other herbal roll ups.

Its their choice, not yours to try and push onto other people because you believe it has no use or point.

Television is in essence 'pointless' it doesn't mean everyone should stop watching it.

 

Smoking For Life!

 

From my understanding they could be denied depending on what job they apply for. Though this isn't common because obviously overweight people are aware of their condition which would prevent them from completing the tasks required.

 

Smokers are being discriminated more and more as the time passes by. Here in Finland the government is planning to ban smoking for good in the next decades.

About 20 years ago even non smoking families had ash trays in their homes so friends who smoke would be feel themself comfortable. Now we're put to smoke at balconies or even totally outside the house!

Restarurants have banned smoking, you can't smoke at work, you can't smoke at school. This is purely racist I say! They can set up laws after laws but I'm not going to quit!

Smoking is early death. It's not a bad idea. I don't smoke and don't like being with smokers together in the same room.

 

Wrong. Drug use is one thing, but cigarettes don't fuck you up or anything, so why should it matter? so someone smells like a cigarette for 30 minutes after their lunch break, big deal..

 

Its a against your civil liberties to stop someone smoking and also if people are going to smoke they are going to smoke theres no way in stopping them . But I feel that being discriminated on as a smoker is absolutely insane after all you make the choice to smoke why should other people make you . Plus to all the haters saying it will make you stop no it wont giving up is ones own decission and it is wrong for the state to try and pressure you into stopping.

 

If people want to smoke let them its not your body or health and the only time i have a problem with it is if someone just got done smoking and walk in a small room that im in.

 

They aren't *making* anybody stop smoking, they're simply allowing employers to refuse employment to people who consistently smell like shit. Would you want to hire someone who ate faeces for lunch everyday? Sure, it's their personal choice to make themself unhealthy and smell terrible, but it's their RIGHT to be employed, isn't it?

Also, for all the whinging in that article and ITT about an overbearing government, the only law mentioned is completely pro-smoking; the illegality of prolonged abstinence from smoking in employment contracts.

Actually, the more I read this article the more ridiculous it seems. "While a smoker or fat guy turned away by one employer can always look for work elsewhere, citizens subject to the state's paternalism cannot easily pick a different government."

This is basically saying FUCK THE GOVERNMENT WE DONT WANT THE MAN INTERFERING LEAVE US ALONE DUDE

 

Yes i think its discriminative but when that kind of measurements are applied then people will just lie that they are non smoker and the final result would probably be the same as it was before using such measurements. If i want to smoke then i have that right to do so cause its not illegal. Like there was said there are many other things that damage you health. If i want to ruin my health and take the risk of dieing at the age of 40 then i should be able to do it without someone restricting and limiting my life quality by not leting me work and earn money only cause i smoke. I think people just like to whine and complain.

 

Just because a dietitian eats Mcdonalds daily doesn't mean they are not good at what they do. I think it's ridiculous people aren't getting jobs because they smoke.

 

And another thing , who says they smoke inside of the hospital ??? Its not like doctors smoke beside their patients, holding a scalpel on one hand and smoke with the other hand. Sure there can be rules about smoking. Like building a smoking room , but i m sure that hospitals have a smoking room. But its clearly extreme stupidity to not let the smoker do his job.

 

Smoking is a waste of money, boring hobby and personally for mindless people. (No offence)

 

Smoking is Very bad for your health and there is no Reason to do it.

 

SEEMS LIKE THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE IN HERE LIKE SMOKING MORE THAN EMPLOYMENT.
