Deers, moose, cows, and many other animals are slaughtered every day, and kept in harsh conditions. They're eaten, and we don't even care that what we're eating was once a living organism. But why is it that when it comes to pet abuse, it's frowned upon? Kick your dog, and you'll be hated and your animal may be taken from you. Stab a deer, and you make profit off selling the skin and meat. I'm completely against animal abuse, but just wondering, why do YOU think that it's okay to harm wildlife but not domestic pets? After all, domestic pets were once wildlife, but trained to behave. Edit: I'm not judging anyone who eats/kills animals, as I am a huge meat eater. This is just opened for debate, I want your opinions. Do you think that pet abuse is okay? Do you think that wildlife abuse is okay?
Livestock are killed (somewhat) humanely for an actual reason; food, pelt, whatever. For the continuing functioning of our race, I think it's a necessary evil. Kicking a pet dog is just pure cruelty.
Dogs, cats, hamsters and other domestic animals are taken into famimiles' homes and become "a part of the family" sort of speak, they aren't bred to feed and clothe human beings, as cows, sheep, chickens etc. are bred to keep our population alive. Let's face it, they are a resource, although not completely nescessary for us to survive, as there are other alternatives (fish for example) but we have been hunting wild animals and breeding farm animals for a long time for resources. You also gotta remember that dogs and cats go way back, cats were worshiped in Egypt, and were domesticated back then, also dogs have been useful for hunting, herding, and just as simple as being a companion. TL;DR When you take in a pet into your home, it becomes a part of your family, and you're not gonna go kick or mistreat your family, that's "wrong" That doesn't mean it's right to go kick a cow or a deer, but these animals are used as resources by humans every day, and are necessary for our survival.
Because we don't have to see our food getting hurt. We buy it pre-killed and tortured. Nobody wants to see animal abuse but there's some things that we understand are a necessity, such as mass producing food. We'd rather just not ask questions because it isn't directly involving us nor do we have to look at it.
We feel sorrow for domesticated animals being abused because we have personally grown emotional attatchments in some way or another to a 'pet'. 'Wildlife abuse' are a necessary process for our means of survival and advancement.
Sums up my view. I hate it when people abuse domestic animals, if you were responsible enough to give it a home why can't you be mature enough to treat it with respect? Just imagine your pet as a newborn baby.... I don't think any sane person would abuse it. P.S I have no pets but I'm very against it.
I admit it is wrong how people treat animals that will eventually get slaughtered, do I feel bad about it? No. Just because there is nothing I can do about it. Abusing domestic animals is pretty much the most cowardly act I can think of any man commiting.
I hate the idea of people abusing animals, but killing an animal humanely. The meat I eat has to come from a good life style though, I don't belive in eating caged food..
I also disagree with the abuse of pets, but are pets seen as "property"? Technically if you "own" something can you not do with it as you please? Again, I am completely against any sort of abuse towards any animal.
domestic pets have certain responsabilities(dont bite/harm others, dont run loos). if they violate these conditions they are usually caught and put down. with adherence to societies rules come a place in it. wild animals have no part in society. they have no responsibilities. basically, its the distinction between dogs and wolves. dogs are bred with humans to augment our way of life. wolves are dangerous wild creatures that you would never want to meet. they are very similar biologically. though we view them differently based on their place in society. if you trained a wolf to obey societies laws it would be considered bad to abuse it.
Killing wildlife has always been needed for our race to survive. If we wouldn't have started eating meat we wouldn't be walking on two legs now. Just kill 'em fast . However pet abuse is something completely different. It's pure cruelty if you abuse them, no matter what kind of pet it is. I think it should deserve the same punishment as human abuse (depending on the case ofcourse). Rape a human get 20 years, rape a pet and get 20 years.
Indeed. You cannot place the same view upon livestock and household domesticated animals because the argument is faltered there - you are applying one set of values upon a different subject group. Why is it illegal to kill humans? We're all animals when it comes down it.
Hear , hear! I very much agree, If you take up such a responibility then you should be a man (or woman )about it. Of course how people treat cattle in todays world is wrong, but this stems back to much deeper social issues. 100-200 years ago farmers treated there animals / food with respect as they realised just how much it meant to them. However the growth of capitalism creating massive companies that mass slaughter animals to feed the growing population has caused much of this. Its also sad to see how much of this food is also wasted and thrown away, people just dont have the relation ship and respect for the food they used to eat.
Cows, chickens, etc. are slaughtered humanely and quickly. It's pointless and cruel to abuse a pet that relies on you.
You don't need to abuse them, killing them in the most humanely possible form is the best way of going about them. i.e. Quick and painless as possible. That's where you're wrong.
That same dollar can be reallocated to keep it so that the policy changes. The same dollar has done so in similar fields, like keeping animals from being used as test subjects for makeup (not that it has completely eradicated it).
