    Hitting of children as punishment

When kids are young they need to know what is right or wrong.
You cannot sit down with a 1 year old and talk and sometimes taking away a toy may not work and so parents hit their kids.
No one likes pain and kids will associate pain with bad behavior and cease to do that behaviour over time.
Want proof it works? Ask any owner with a disciplined dog how it became so disciplined, I'm sure hitting he dog was used at one point.

Hitting is not neccesarry, if you use, " time out zones etc" kids can perfectly well learn what's good and wrong :).

What about older children? I think that a little hitting is good to apply discipline. Now when you send your child to their room, given they have nothing in there but their bed, that isn't very good. It could lead to them developing psychological and mental illness and even poor social skills... Why do you think nobody wants to be put in Confinery in jail? It messes with your head.

Use of violence as a form of punishment isn't acceptable. It will just create more and more violent people, who in return will beat their children; this time without reason.
    Vicious circle anybody?

What do you suggest is a better form of discipline? there's nothing wrong with a little spanking.

    Very controversial.

There are people I meet day to day that really just need to get the crap kicked out of them.

Personally, I have been "spanked" and been lightly "belted" but, I feel that hitting as punishment is acceptable, but keep in mind there is a VERY thin line between abuse and punishment.

    Smacking worked with me...
I used to a smack right on the ass if I was naughty, hard enough to make me cry (which obviously wasn't much as a child), I was never caught doing the same thing again after being smacked.

All children are different and it takes different methods to raise them.

Sit down with them and explain to them why you dont want them to do something, why they need to do something , etc. Make them understand the difference between right and wrong. Your child shouldn't base actions based on fear of being hit , but rather logic and morals that have been taught by you(your job as a parent).

Also, using violence as discipline will only lead to the child to be more violent as they grow up which can be a problem especially in teen years.

    Hitting of children as punishment

..That's why I have times I want to murder someone. (seriously).
I personally thought that punishment would do wonders.
Like my parents made me do wall-sits. (Last year when I was actively weight lifting, I was able to max out at 530lbs).
Maybe make the kids to planks or something.
What Quadra said might change my way of punishment now...
(Originally thinking a few "no don't do that." then if done again, *spank*).

you teach them to not do whatever they did and not hit them. i don't think you should hit kids but i don't care there your kids lol. if they keep doing it a lot you punish them if its not a big deal. i was NEVER hit when i was up to at least 8 and i was the only kid who was not a brat the rest of the kids screamed and disobeyed there parents on purpose just to mess with them and did bad stuff and they were hit all the time every time they did whatever they were not suppose too and they continued to do it.

I support physical discipline, I was physically disciplined growing up for the very ignorant things I did and I was a lot less likely to go re-involve myself in the act after being physically disciplined as opposed to my parents just grounding me for a week like liberal parents feel we should do.

It doesn't work for everyone, you gotta understand not every child is the same, and not everyone matures at the same time.

My parents tore me the hell up when i did something stupid. Ripped my pants off spanked me naked with a belt about 3 times.

when i got older my attitude was "that shit don't hurt bitch" So my dad proceeded to slapping the shit out of me everytime i mouthed off. It did the trick and i of course thank my parents for showing me discipline.

When i hit puberty i stopped crying when i got hurt and getting hit wasn't a punishment so i just got things i cared about taken away for weeks. Internet, Car, skateboard, grounded.

I;m too old and too big to be spanked or slapped now, and i've moved out but ill probably follow my parents lead.

You can't reason with a small child
in most cases you have to use force to show the difference between right and wrong, but not too much, theres a thin line between discipline and child abuse

Pardon my French, but I think it's (Beep-ing) disgusting.

How can you physically abuse someone that you helped to create because they won't do what you want? Morally wrong.

There are much better ways, talking, or taking things away works just as well if not better.

This, in all words; I believe punishment is acceptable to a certain extent. Taking away items isn't enough anymore because they seem to find a way to con it back or sneak it back.

Hitting children is 100% okay if they do something that deserves punishment.

Nowadays parents just think taking away a video game does it. It dosent, physical pain is something that no kid wants to experience so they know that if they something bad there going to have a punishment.

    Hitting of children as punishment

I would agree to corporal punishment (WTB spellcheck lol) because of its ability to drive home a point fairly quickly. Going through public school, I saw a lot of kids that I personally would like to knock the fuck out (not suggesting this for teachers to do btw) because I want to learn, and they are SO FREKIN DESTRACTING!!!! But seriously, I would say it would help our society greatly.

Here is one thing to ponder...Ever since hitting children has been criminalized, parents no longer blame their children for mistakes they have made (for the majority of parents). For example, when a kid in my private school is kicked out, their parents don't yell at their child, they blame the school or say "Oh not my Billy! He would never do such a thing!" Yet back in the day, you would be, for lack of a better term, fucked if you were kicked out of private school (or any school) for smoking weed. Your parents would basically disown you; this not only made kids think twice about picking up the habit, but also to really drive home the lesson the child should have drawn from the situation. I cannot tell you how many kids in my schools junior class have been kicked out for smoking weed. So to sum everything up, I would agree to hitting children as a punishment, just don't go crazy!

Necessary in some situations but not recommended, there's plenty other ways of torture. Lol nah, I would never hit my children, if I ever have any, it's just not right imo.

What's the kid going to think? (Depending on the age) He/she might never want to see you in their life again, could ruin the kid, there's plenty of effects this can have on a child. :( Big no from papa Dammed
