Implement a Sticky for Account Sales

As anybody who has experience on Sythe knows, account sales are some of the riskiest trades on this website. Why? Accounts are very easily recovered. I once recovered an account for a customer, and I accidentally left the membership info blank. All I inputted were previous passwords, and creation ISP/date.

Basically, whereas getting scammed in an item sale, etc. can be eliminated using a MM, in account sales, account sales scams can occur months after the trade. In trades that I MM'ed and ended up being scammed, a lot of the time the buyer demands to know how it was possibly scammed, since it had his email and recoveries. I had to explain several times that the email, recovery questions, and even other information are only moderately important. The most important thing in any account sales scam is if you wrote the recovery appeal on the PC that created the account.

My suggestion is simple: create a sticky (like the "What makes a rare name" sticky) in the account sales sections explaining the risk involved in account sales and how to limit this risk. I'd even be willing to write the sticky, if mods are too busy to do so.

Agreed, I've been scammed on another forum with an account for account trade and I got my pure ruined for it.

 

It's fine, but the problems I have with it are it's in the wrong place, and it's not specific enough. People really put way too much faith in the fact that an account has no email/recoveries registered. I could make a similar one, explaining more in-depth.

One thing to always look out for in an account sale is a lock, but there is no sticky anywhere on Sythe explaining lock procedures. Basically, you're screwed if your trading partner doesn't agree to unlock an account if it gets locked. In my experience at least 25% of my sales get locked within a month.

 

The sticky created by R2P doesn't put enough realization into the buyers mind..I support Kero writing this sticky, and I hope it makes the community just a tad safer.

Take Care in Trading your Accounts!

Please air on the side of caution when looking for accounts to buy. Account sales are often the most commonly scammed trades on Sythe. The following are very common misconceptions of account sales:

• If I have my own email and recoveries registered, then the account is safe.
NO! Jagex looks at the earliest information in an account appeal. If the email/recovery questions are less than a few months old, chances are they are worthless in a recovery appeal.

• The seller says it has an email, but he can't remember it. I'm still safe.
NO! Oftentimes, you can recover an account with only the email address, as long as you can access that email account. If a seller says this, do not buy the account.

• The seller is offering to give the full details of the account, so I'll be safe.
NO! The only way to prove the details are correct is with a recovery test. Just because they give you details does not mean they are correct.

• The account passed a recovery test, so it will be safe.
NO! By far the most important part of an appeal is that it was filed from the original computer that it was played on. If you do not have access to this appeal, it may be several months before you'll be able to recover the account.

• My account was locked! I need to file a scam report!
NO! Accounts being locked just means Jagex suspects it of being hacked. The reason you cannot successfully appeal a lock is because they are highly based on the IP address that appeals the lock. Just talk with your seller and have him unlock it. Make sure you are buying an account only from the original owner, otherwise it may never be unlocked!


Beware:
It is extremely easy for a seller to recover his account back! Oftentimes, all he really needs to do is submit the appeal, regardless if the info is correct. If Jagex sees an appeal submitted from the original IP of the account, they will accept it. Likewise, you'll almost certainly not be able to recover the account, even if you can claim you know exactly every detail of it.

Also, try to avoid getting your account permanently locked. At least 20% of account sales end up in a locked account, so make sure the buyer agrees to help in that event.

Always do the following in account trades:
• Take screenshots of everything in case it gets recovered.
• Trade only with trusted members.
• Look up the email address/login name of the account in this thread to see if it's a previously hacked account.
• Always use a middleman to add an extra level of security.
• Only buy accounts if the seller says he is the original owner and agrees to assist in a lock appeal.
