Jagex IP Tracing Skills

So, I was discussing this with a friend earlier today, and I wanted a REAL answer (we currently aren't in agreement).

They can trace IP's, obviously, but are they noting who logs on those IP's, and how many accounts log in on those IP's.

Basically, we can't find a common ground in that Jagex CANNOT IP ban you simply because, you are making 100 botting machines. BUT, they can ban the accounts all they want, just not your IP.

Also, that means that you can "trade a friend" between two people on the same IP, AKA money transfer.

they only do chain bans for account hijacking and large scale RWT operations.
Gold4RS is one that's been IP banned many times and just continues to use different VPN addresses.

as far as trading with a friend... having two accounts login from the same IP is multiple loging in and gets you banned for 10days.

I knew that they wouldn't ban my IP if I made hundreds of bots and individually started to gold farm with them. Haha. He doesn't believe me, well wait until he see's that someone does agree.

 

1) I've been multi-logging in the same world for many years, for example solo luring with two accounts.

2) I've been IP banned after being caught on bug abuse on quite a few accounts.

 

Well, IP'd accounts vs. IP ban was what I was talking about. I haven't heard of many people saying IP banned accounts before though?

 

I don't think there is such thing as an "IP banned account". It would actually be pretty lame, like you can't use your account at your house but you can at your friends. I think they do actually bad IP's though.

 

I have been banned on my ip before but it hasn't hurt my other accounts or have done any thing else. I also run about 2-4 bots a lot of the time and they haven't banned them or blocked my ip. I think Jagex would only do that if your a real threat to the community. Other wise if they ban an account chances are you will come back and pay for membership with a new account which equals more and more money for them.

They used to IP ban more heavily years ago (SCAR, Dupers mainly) but I haven't heard of it happening in quite awhile

 

IP Tracing?

No jagex can't trace ip's, only ISP's can trace down ip's.
Jagex can just monitor ip adresses on accounts and such and link a ban to an ip adress which almost never happens.

 

As justun dude said, they can only trace IP adresses.

 

Right sorry, I was just trying to get the point across for a matter of time and patience.

But as said above by a few people, I do know that they did do the IP ban back then. I was sure they didn't do it now, probably IP bans for the middle eastern, and asian countries. lol.

 

Well, we all know (should know anyway) that Jagex can track our IP addresses. It's obvious, because some people have actually had Jagex contact the police, and know where you live, and send them to your house for whatever reason. They have also IP banned people, but, as they say "every account is a new account" and something about not holding us because one account was banned at our IP.

In other words, you're right and they don't ban IP's for botting, they will just ban the accounts. But they can, easily, trace Ip's and do various things with it (in terms of securing accounts, etc)

 

They can't actually 'trace' you, sure they can contact your ISP & the
authorities and in this case, the ISP gives out the information to the
authorities. Thus ending in how the police end up on your door step.
Besides, it would be illegal for Jagex to physically 'trace' their users.

 

What he was trying to say is that the only time Jagex will IP ban is when the people using the IP address are doing exactly what you have just described lol

 

They aren't tracing your IP to find out where you live, they are just keeping track of the different IP addresses you have used with your account. No way the authorities are going to show up on your doorstep unless your name is...say...rsbots?

Absolutely correct. Tracking and linking different accounts together via IP's is a tricky thing. Considering dynamic IP's, proxies, and public hotspots, every single player is somehow connected. It's not easy to say with 100% certainty who is who.

 

Sorry to dig this thread out of the grave, but if Jagex doesn't track your IP's location, then why do they ask where you live and if you've ever moved when you're using the account recovery system? And surely this can't mean they simply see if your IP has ever changed, because people with dynamic IPs could essentially change their IP every time they reset their modem.

Telling them where I live was one of the pieces of information that helped me recover my account back in 2007.

 

I've been "range banned" on a certain hosting bot on the battle.net after publicly announcing I was dodging bans, in that situation having a dynamic IP or changing mac won't help after you get a location ban since your location and the area close to you and the IP's associated with it are effectivenly banned.

Only way around it is to use a VPN, wich can be quite expensive if you want to get a good one.

 

Internet providers buy subnets like 81.82.x.x -> IP's from my, belgian provider.

My provider then splits this range of IPs up in groups, every group is assigned with a location.

If you have a IP from group "Amsterdam" then jagex will think ur from Amsterdam.


Real tracing (rather then just looking at your subnet) requires HTML5, your authorization and is not always reliable.
