Whats wrong with my internet :(

I am paying for att's highest internet package which is like 6mb/s I'm pretty sure..I also bought a netgear router about a year ago, and that is 54mb/s..soo I'm fine with the 54mb/s cap...but im only getting around 160kbps on utorrent, and speedtest.net says im getting 1.94mbps.....sooooo WHY?!?! im raking out the cash to att, but am getting basically nothing in return :'( someone please help, im technology literate...but this is just way out of my league

 

Your actual download speed isn;t 1.94MBs, you divide it by something(forgot what) and then thats your speed.
Try connecting directly into your modem via ethernet cable, should be faster then.

 

As a lot of people would say, you should contact your internet service provider, as they know what's happening. But I suggest you upgrade your Router firmware as it might fix some things, such as download speeds. Here's a suggestion, plug in your Modem, and plug it into your PC, connect it and test out the download speeds and what not. If there is no difference, then I don't think your Router has anything to do with the Router.

 

If you're doing something like botting in the background, it may be sucking out all the bandwidth which means that downloading through torrents is slower. If you are doing something like this, restart your computer and close all other programs running.

 

You might be using a lot of bandwidth that your unaware of like the other guy said. Check that before contacting your isp.

 

thank you for your suggestions, I don't bot, and i have a network meter and its seeing what im seeing out of it. I will try hooking it directly to my modem and see what happens from there
