I've been lurking around this section, and I've noticed that all of the people who believe in god are completely done. Sure, they argue back some points but the people who don't believe in god usually just blow them away.

So I'm just curious, why do you think that people believe in god?

I believe that people believe in god because they just need something to believe in. I'm not sure why, but some people seem to get happy whenever they think that someone in the sky is watching over them. They probably also think "what's the point of life if there's no reward after?"

You hit the nail on the head here, well atleast in my point of view, I believe in god because thats the way i was raised, I have nothing against nor do i care about what people all i know is that i believe. Im not the type of person to argue about religion but im not the most holy person myself. I just always think that if i die i want to at least have a chance of going to heaven by believing. since no one really knows what happens when someone dies.

As carbon james said, you hit the nail on the head. That is exactly why people believe in God, simply put. It is completely possible to live a happy life without believing in god though. :)

Yeah, that's how I live it. Rather than hoping for a better after live, I hope for a better live for future generations.

People believe in God, not only just to believe in something. But to have someone that is always there for you.

That's speaks true thoughts there, if god may not be real then we would of had a reassuring thought that later in life you have something to put your brittle bones on and touch.

Alot of elderly people find peace by attending mass everyday. I believe it makes them feel one with God again.

People who believe in God are usually "blown away" in arguments because honestly it's not possible to prove God exists. It would be similar to me trying to convince you of the fact that there isn't other intelligent life in our universe or there isn't anything smaller than a neutron.. It simply can't be done because nobody is sure. I believe because there has to be something more to life right? What's the point in living a life just to die and nothing happen? I wasn't raised in a strictly christian household. Our family goes to church together maybe once a month... If that. I think that there are a lot of "poster Christians" out there who simply life a good life and follow the rules but don't strive to embrace Christ, but on another note there are a lot of people who are the exact opposite. It's a hard argument to make I guess it's just how someone interprets the world around them as to what they believe.

Rare to find someone with similar opinions on this matter for the positive. I think there are more people out there who agree they just don't know how to word themselves to keep from looking ignorant.

People believe in God to give life an ultimate purpose.
If there is a God, there is a point of doing things individually. If not, everything done should be for the purpose of furthering our society.
Religion helps people rationalize why "doing good" means anything.

I disagree. I believe if there is a true purpose at all, humans' brain capacity and or logic system does not have the ability to comprehend it.

For example, an aargument usually used is "there must be a god, how did the universe form". My response to that is, then how did god form? The fact of the matter is that humans do not have logic possible to understand an infinite amount of time or space, which is what we assume the world is.

Arguments about the existence of God are pointless. If you believe in God, you will believe in God, if you do not, you won't. Our human minds can not even begin to comprehend the existence of a being like God. Sure, some might have a small idea of who He is, but that's barely anything.

I believe in God, not because I'm desperate, or need something to live for. I believe in God because every day I look around, and I can see one more reason why there can't possibly not be one. Science cannot prove how the world was created anymore than a Christian cannot prove it was made by God, so what exactly is there to debate about? That's why there aren't many active participants in these discussions. You get the same old arguments every time, and it's a waste of time for any half intelligent person.

On most of the threads it's not Atheists trying to argue their view on life it's atheists trying to convince us we are wrong and should think like them. That's why most people don't post on them. This one however wasn't exactly filled with those types of people so I felt it would be okay to post here.

Because we were raised that way. I personally avoid all religious debate on purpose because it's all argument without logic. You can try and voice your opinion and back it up with facts, but the fact is that nobody knows for sure. If you think you know for sure, you're retarded. If you try to make other believe the same as you, your a fascist, and retarded.

Although, atheists can say they know for sure because there's no logical proof to prove that it exists and that would dictate that it doesn't exist. Obviously most would agree noone knows for sure because everyone has a small bit of faith in them that allows improbabilities to exist but in a pure logical standpoint, it's absolute.

I tend to stay out of religious arguments due to the fact that we as humans cannot prove that there is a god or that there is not. I take the term 'believe in god' as just that. It is a belief and is based solely on opinion rather than fact because after all, you can't prove it either way as stated above. What I get sick of is when Atheists think they are right and will post any and all scientific information to prove they are right. I'm also sick of Christians or people of other religions posting that they are right and using the same old arguments. Neither group gets anywhere in these debates despite what they may think.

I believe in God, but you won't see me arguing with you guys about it. It's a belief. Do you guys not realize that nothing is ever proven in these threads?

Eitherway there's NO proof that god doesn't exist, but neither is there proof he does.

But i agree that most believers just cant comprehend existance without a greater being.

There is never complete proof of anything as it is impossible to know whether or not your senses (the foundation of scientific discovery) are wrong. I can not prove that gravity exists but I can predictably and reliably drop a penny and "know" that it will hit the ground. I use the word "know" here in a different sense as I can never be completely sure that the penny will indeed fall, but I can conclude from past experiences that the penny has always hit the ground before so it will again this time. In addition to this, I can stop believing that a penny will always fall if I drop it if someone comes along and drops a penny and it does not drop. This is called falsifiability. The existence or non-existence of a God can not be observed, like gravity can. This also means that it can not be falsified. This is why God arguments are the way they are. The believers state their beliefs and try to back them up with evidence that, for the most part, can not be verified. A miracle is a good example of this. A religious believer will determine that the best explanation for what has happened is an act of God. A non-believer will state that there is an explanation based on the rules of the world that may just not be apparent. Essentially its all about the best explanation to a problem.
