    Ability to change thread title

I'd assume this has been suggested before, but it's not on the do not suggest list.

Is there any reason why we (non-mods) can't edit our the title on our threads? It seems like it would cut down on extra (unnecessary) duplicate threads and would save mods time. I'm not suggesting that we can edit other peoples threads (since those are mod-powers :p ), only our own.

    Thanks :)

EDIT 1: Did a little research and apparently you can allow users to edit their own title by following the steps given by the person on this thread: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=213304

    EDIT 2: Proof it worked (in 2003, anyways :) ): http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/show...e-but-it-only-changes-the-title-of-their-post

The way v-bulletin coding works is that the usergroup with permissions to do so can also do things that non-staff shouldn't be able to do. Basically, if you were allowed to change your thread title you'd also have several other staff-level abilities.

I'd assume that when you make an account you get put into at least 1 usergroup (like... forum member or something). Couldn't you just make one of the permissions for that the ability to edit your own threads?

Otherwise, the Admin could make a new usergroup and add everybody to it. Then, make the only permission for that usergroup that ability to edit your own thread.

Sorry if I'm completely wrong with the way v-bulletin works, but it seems lie the kind of issue you could work around =]

I believe permissions are assigned individually to usergroups.

OT: No support, it'd cause too much vandalism. People will change the title/OP and then the whole thread will have what appears to be spam but originally wasn't.

I'm saying people should only be able to edit their OWN title. If people are determined to sabotage themselves and create spammy threads, they don't need to be able to edit their thread title to do that.

    Ability to change thread title

Did a little searching on google. It looks like the only way to normally allow people to edit their own thread titles is by making them a mod (which gives them ALL mod abilities which we CAN'T do obviously o_O ).

However, I think this thread ( http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=213304 ) shows admins how to let non-mod users edit their titles. Apparently, you usually have a set time limit in which you can edit your title. If the admin sets that limit to a really high number (instead of the default of 0), people can change their thread titles indefinitely. Seems like a simple fix for an annoying problem :)

EDIT: Proof that that worked (in the 2003 version of v-bulletin anyway :) ) http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/show...e-but-it-only-changes-the-title-of-their-post

I'm unsure of which version we use, but I do know that it's not the latest one..however I doubt it's '03. Additionally, this has been suggested before and the answer I gave previously is what a staff member said (I can't remember who it was...)

Did some more google'ing, apparently changing that time limit to 999999 (thats in minutes, so that's like 2 years) or something like that works on all versions of v-bulletin

I agree that regular users should be able to change their own thread titles. Support!

    We're running vBulletin 3.6.4

Edit: About the changing of thread titles... I'm not completely sure, but I think the permissions would be a mess without a new user group. If we are allowed to change the thread title, there's a slew of other things we would be capable of so this wouldn't be allowed. Again, I'm not positive on this.

From those threads in the original post, they make it seem like this has nothing to do with usergroups or permissions. There is a setting that determines the time limit for how long after people post a thread that they can change the title. Currently, sythe's time limit for non-mods appears to be 0. If you change that to a higher number, people will have the ability to change THEIR OWN THREAD TITLES for a set amount of time (e.g. 99999 minutes). From what I've read, that time limit *only* pertains to thread title edits.
