    Account Sharing

After almost being banned for suspected account sharing, it made me think about that rule. I really never paid attention to the rule, as it was never a problem when I was a mod, and I never let anyone else on my account/used another person's account. However, after proving my innocence, it got me thinking. It would have really sucked if I did let someone else on my account, or if I used someone's account. Even if a member signs onto another members account without malicious intent, a member will still be banned. I think this rule is pretty harsh for no harm done. Yes, I understand hacking and using an account is bad, but just signing on, and possibly posting doesn't seem bad to me. I think this rule should be revised or maybe even taken off. If there is no harm done, what is wrong with account sharing? If the person using the other person's account spams, oh well, the account being used will be infracted (no big deal). If the user wants to trust another user with their account, I think that is their prerogative. They are taking the risk, so let them. Maybe I am missing something, so I appreciate some input.

    Edit:

For all you 11 year olds...(tl;dr)

Account sharing should not be a bannable offense. Ban people for wrong doing, and harmful things.

Well, both users would be banned if any scamming/any other bannable offense was involved. You can differentiate it the same way you do for any other user, by using the rules as a guideline. Pretty simple tbh.

Could you give me an example to why Account sharing would be necessary?

It's not to be honest, but I would hate to be banned for it. I have no reason to log on somebody's account, not many people in the past have shared. It's just a weird reason to be banned in my opinion.

I see where you are going with this but it seems quite subjective. Like Karl said, where do you draw the line? On one hand, I see no reason at all for account sharing whether it's for good or bad intent. On the other hand, I would be angry if someone gained access to my account, did nothing wrong, and I was banned.

The same rules would still be in place, there are no lines to draw, they are already drawn for us.
Yeah, I don't plan on sharing if the rule is taken away, but I wouldn't want to be banned, or have others banned for such a frivolous rule. I think only one person has been banned for this, and he got a pardon. So, the rule seems stupid to me.

What I meant about drawing the line is: what is considered using the account for bad? Obviously scamming would be bad, but spamming or trolling for example? I guess it wouldn't be that hard to 'draw the line'.

I agree with that second part. If the rule is seldom used, if not at all, what's the point? If someone scams while account sharing, go ahead and ban them. But logging on and doing nothing or just looking at some threads seems harmless.

Well, you pretty much argued against yourself. Basically the same rules are in place, just both users are banned if they commit a bannable offense determined by the rules of sythe.org. If it's not a bannable offense, just the account being involved is infracted, like normal. It's not hard to regulate.

Edit: btw how many other hands do you have? o_O

I was just trying to look at it from both sides. I would hate to be banned if someone logged on my account and did nothing.

Take a look at the permanent ban offenses:

    • Scamming: bad/harmful
    • Password Cracking: bad/harmful
    • Posting infected files: bad/harmful
    • Account Sharing: neither bad or good, but not harmful
    • Returning after a ban/Ban evading: bad/potentially harmful
    • Using viewing bots for your threads: bad

I don't really see why you, or anyone else would care. Don't give out your password to anyone, and you wont have any problems. Yes, it does seem a bit harsh to get perm banned for giving your password to a friend, but don't be stupid in the first place and you wont have to deal with the consequences.

Obviously...but that's not the point here. The point is to find the negatives with the rule to keep it in place, but if there are no negatives, why have the rule?

Edit: It seems stupid to rid Sythe.org of legit members just because they have logged onto someone else's account, with no wrong doing (besides sharing).

I never put a tl;dr. I just add a one sentence summary to the end!

I completely agree though. There is no need to perm ban people over something so petty.

I agree that this should not be a permanently bannable offense, or even a punishable offense...

If so, I would just like to point out that you should permanently ban the following:

    Jansen/Deacon/Shin/wizardzgame/TDD

    http://sythe.org/showthread.php?t=798803

We all gave Daily access to our accounts for an april fools joke. Completely harmless, got a few laughs, nothing wrong or bad happened, and no one was the wiser.

So, I vote for a complete removal of the rule, or at least a clause stating that if the account is used maliciously, there will be no second chances on the basis of "it wasn't me accessing my account". :)

I honestly support this. A permanent ban is a bit too extreme. I think it should be what actions the account has done that should be focused on.
And of course, not to allow account sharing but rather to do a temporary ban instead of an permanent ban. Violating this over and over again then a permanent ban will suffice.
