if they're breaking rules anywhere why would we want them apart of this community.

 

After some thought, your proposal just makes the status quo written down in regard to "current offsite activities" (note name of thread). Banning for prior events are much less important, as they have less prevalence. There are two extremes with this debate, do not ban anyone for anything offsite or ban everyone for breaking Sythe.org rules, no matter where the actual event takes place. Over the last bit of time, the policy of the staff has been moving farther and farther towards the banning extreme and now may have even passed it by banning those who discuss bannable actions. However, I know for a fact that past staffs did not agree with the current policy.

I am in no way saying that Sythe should take the other extreme and not ban anyone, as I know this will never happen. I am instead looking for a compromise that would make it so that people who pose an obvious threat to Sythe can be banned while those who deserve a chance should not be. I am, at this point, not going to post my thought process about why I support the suggestion presented (partly because I am making food and I want it). Once it seems like the staff are willing to take a second look at the policy and want me to explain my position, I will gladly do so.

 

Hacking and password cracking are not generally associated with Runescape. If you hack or cracked your way into a Jmod account or hacked your way into the database to change your stats, I would not have any problem with that. Using these to steal is the bad part. However, it does not seem like you understand the suggestion given as it is not really about hacking or cracking specifically.

In many cases they are not breaking any rules.

Anything that is breaking Sythe.org rules directly enough to earn a perm ban if you were to do it here, you shouldn't do it at all if you wish to be a member here.

Banning someone for having an account on another forum would be stupid.

If you participate in illegal offsite activites, such as the things going on at FJ, then yeah you'll be banned.

 

Discussing things is not illegal yet still leads to a ban.

Staff are currently discussing this. We aren't going to have some sweeping cure all policy. I'll tell you more as I can.

 

I know they are. Why not do something sweeping? Do essentially what is outlined in this thread and add in using offsite activities as part of a ban with multiple smaller reasons.

 

Would you rather have an sweeping policy of idealism or a more fair case by case basis policy?


For me, the main question we always have to ask is 'Is this hurting Sythe.org?"

 

I am a big advocate of case by case bans, as long as there is guidelines. However, it seems that most of the staff are pro-banning and thus I feel that system that is not strict for this matter would just end up being the same. The "we can ban anyone" clause is still in affect and if there is one case that is obviously worse than almost all the others, then a different course of action of course could and should be taken.

I also agree with that question. Banning Ddosers, hackers, and crackers HURTS Sythe. It pisses them off and makes them come after us. There is no need for an account for any of these offenses, so there is no reason to ban them as long as they are behaved here.

 

I have proposed and am executing a new way of dealing with off-site offenders.

A mod may either "straight out ban" anyone for any off-site offense or they may bring it up in staff lounge for opinions, its their personal choice.

Heres the big change: When it comes to the dispute forum, evidence will be shown and a collective decision must be made. No more 1 person dictator decisions.

Also pondering if only interest is shown, then no ban should result. Only ban if deep interest or success is found.

Thoughts

 

There needs to be a line drawn between simple interest and deep interest. If that is done then one person dictator decisions, as long as they are following the rules, would be fine.
