Thinking about this question from a scientific and evolutionary point of view, humans are calculating creatures who will do anything to survive by any means necessary, and it seems the only exception to this rule is love. Whether it is for a friend, partner, or even a co-worker, when you factor in love, it makes you do things that are not efficient, that do not promote fitness for humans as a species, and sometimes to not even care about ones own life in an attempt to save another (one that is loved). From the point of view of science, love is a flaw in the human design, but then again it is also a miracle and is one of the main benefits of abstract thought. (sorry if that was too long, just got on a roll, LOL)
