I would say , The wheel.
The invention of the wheel is probably the most important invention of all time. Without the wheel, the world simply wouldn't exist as we know it. The invention of the wheel was at the root of the Industrial Revolution.​

 

Fire. Without fire basically nothing would exist.

 

I would have to say the alphabet. Where would we be today if we had never found a way to properly communicate with each other?

 

Medicine without it we probably wouldn't be here right now.

If its counted as an invention, then medicine, By now I think we would have all been killed by something like small pox, which is now completely eradicated off the face of the earth except for in some scientific laboratorys

I mean, it's completely changed the world how it functions, completely, in the last 20 years more than anything, and will continue to do so in future years to come.

 

erm, some of these aren't really inventions but I guess if we really want to go to discoveries or happenings in our species, then I would say the invention (or more so mutation) to discover abstract thought. The ability to calculate possible outcomes of future situations, decide on actions based on an infinite number of variables, and of course as others have said, to be able to then take that knowledge and tell others and write it down. Tracing humanity back to the beginning, without the development of abstract thought, we would still be struggling to survive without tools, fire, or agriculture, just like the mammals we are. LOL
