    Title says all.

    If someone sells his account, then recovers it back, how does the buyer prove that he got scammed by the seller and not hacked by a keylogger/hacker?

    Unless the buyer is able to login to the account again, and manages to get the Ip address and it matches the seller, then it can prove that the seller scammed?

    What if the buyer's recovery fails?

    Will the scammer manage to escape freely like this?

    Yes that is very true. But if the victim tries to tell everyone that the seller is a scammer without valid proof, the victim can get banned for accusing someone without proof.

    Furthermore, the victim also has no grounds to claim that the seller was indeed the scammer.

    Account recovery is one of the harder things to be able to prove, especially if an account has changed hands multiple times.

    The plznate/voda/polabear situation is a good example. From the dispute forum now we can see GP Master was the actual account recpver-er and not Voda as it looked the first time around.

    I am developing a guide/template to try to help combat this problem. Before you buy an account go to the sellers profile and view all of there created threads and see if it has been sold before.

    Well that's why you have to do a recovery check before buying the acc so if it does get recovered back, you can always recover it back once again and get the IP Address...

    @idcboutu

    that is a good point. BUT if the seller uses recover a stolen password, jagex will reset the recoveries and allow the seller to set another set of new recoveries. Furthermore, when the recover a stolen password is used, Jagex will flag the account and make sure the potential 'hacker' which is actually the buyer, does not manage to get it back.

    @Firez
    I followed that incident too as it was pretty interesting and it is a very good example too.
    I really look foward to your guide/template, i applaud you for your hard work once again!

    When MMing account sales or when receiving accounts "first" in a trade, I do this as well as look if it is on the Do Not Sell list. Unfortunately, the vast majority scammed buyers do not post the account on there, so it's a limited tool.

    I've always thought of recovery scam reports as the scammed person getting the benefit of the doubt just by taking a screenshot (which is VERY easily faked) of the incorrect password screen. If the person was framed (which is rare), all he needs to say is "Well, I gave him the information again--look." and it should be sorted out.

    I believe it's possible.

    In most cases the person who sells the account would also give incorrect recovery information; so there will be less chance of the account getting locked. If that's the case a moderator can team view the chat logs of the trade and test the account information. If the recovery test fails - it must of mean one of the following things: 1, Fake information or 2, Not enough information is given. Either way, as the seller you are to make sure the account is secure and safe. So I don't see why not make the account seller responsible for it.

    You will never succeed a recovery test if the account is originally the sellers, and he have been on it for years.. I have tried to do recovery tests, and all of them have failed.

    I've thought about this before... If the original owner sells an account and accusations of a scam fly around there is actually no way to prove someone recovered their account. It's one word over another.

    I forgot to include this.

    To check if the seller is actually a scammer, the buyer can request the seller to do a recovery for him. If indeed, the seller is a not a scammer, the seller
    will not help the buyer do a recovery. Or even if he helps the buyer do a recovery, he will hack it back again and the process goes on forever and makes it pretty obvious its the seller that is hacking i back again.

    However, if the seller isn't a scammer, the seller will recover it back, set new recoveries/email, give it to the buyer, and everything will be settled. ( If the buyer was keylogged, he would delete all the viruses before contacting the seller first )

    I've wondered this myself. I've had 3 accounts recovered from me and I can't get them back, and I also can't prove they did.

    Send me a PM with who you bought those 3 accounts from and let me do some digging.

    1. I have given an mm who was doing a recovery test all the information I had which I used for recovering an account and it failed on him. It worked for me because the account was created on my ip, that doesn't mean that I gave the mm the wrong info.

    2. I gave another mm the recovery info and you know what? My account got locked. So I had to delay my sale 3 days when I really needed the money.

    3. I'll just say this, Most people are idiots who download keyloggers ; rats and get infected then lose their account.

    By the way, if someone contacts me saying their account has been recovered and they show me proper proof of purchase then I'll always try and recover it back for them.

    Well, if you think about it the only scamming that is really provable is blocking the contact after they send the money. For a quester, the owner of the account could just drop everything in the account and frame the quester. I think moderators should keep framing in the mind as seen above it has been done before.

    As you have seen, there really is no surefire way to prove anything with account recovery situations. How can you prove that your account was even stolen? Unless we had a way to get inside your brain and see what the real password was beforehand, it's basically hearsay. Furthermore, how can you prove who stole it? It could have been one of the previous owners, a service provider on Sythe, someone who hacked you. It's a messy situation which has no black and white answer, and when I was moderating I found these scam reports the most difficult to rule on. Make sure to screenshot the last IP logged onto your account when you do recover it, and have it timestamped.
